U.S. Energy Secretary Praises Qatar's Strategic Role

During his visit, Chris Wright highlights energy cooperation and diplomatic efforts in regional conflicts.

Doha, April 19, 2025 - In a significant display of diplomatic engagement, U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright praised the enduring partnership between Qatar and the United States during his visit to Doha. On April 18, Wright emphasized that Qatar is not only a "strategic ally" but also a "major energy producer" that plays a vital role in global energy markets.

In statements made to Qatar News Agency (QNA), Wright expressed satisfaction with the close cooperation between the two nations, particularly in the fields of energy and infrastructure. He highlighted Qatar's long-term strategic vision, which has propelled the country to undertake massive infrastructure projects in collaboration with both local and international partners.

"We're thrilled to see the Golden Pass LNG facility finish constructing and start exporting gas from the United States sometime mid next year," said Wright, referring to the Golden Pass LNG facility project, which is nearing completion. This project underscores the robust cooperation between the U.S. and Qatar in the energy sector.

During his visit, Wright aimed to strengthen bilateral cooperation and build trust with his counterpart, HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi. He praised the constructive dialogue held with HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, and also visited several industrial and chemical facilities under construction, which exemplify the fruitful collaboration between QatarEnergy and leading U.S. companies.

As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, Wright noted that natural gas has emerged as the fastest-growing energy source over the past decades. Both Qatar and the United States, being the largest producers and exporters of natural gas, play a pivotal role in ensuring the security and stability of global energy supplies.

In a move to enhance energy security, the United States is resuming the issuance of licenses for gas export terminals that had previously been suspended. This initiative aims to bolster long-term energy supplies for allies, including Qatar.

Wright also indicated that the U.S. administration is actively seeking to attract Qatari investments, which would create new opportunities for economic growth and generate more jobs for Americans. He clarified that market dynamics and supply-demand policies are the primary determinants of energy prices, while the current administration focuses on increasing energy supplies and strengthening strategic relations with allies.

QatarEnergy holds a 70% stake in the Golden Pass LNG project, which represents a total investment of approximately $11.5 billion, while ExxonMobil owns the remaining 30%. The project's production capacity is set at 18 million tons of LNG annually, which is expected to significantly contribute to U.S. export revenues.

Meanwhile, Qatar's diplomatic efforts extend beyond energy cooperation. The emirate is also playing a crucial role in mediating conflicts in the region. On March 18, 2025, Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani facilitated a meeting in Doha between Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi and Rwandan President Paul Kagame. This unexpected diplomatic maneuver aimed to address the ongoing conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels have been gaining ground since January 2025.

The M23 rebels have captured significant territories, including the capitals of North Kivu and South Kivu, Goma and Bukavu, respectively. President Tshisekedi has been seeking Qatar's mediation since late 2022, and the Emir's strong ties with Kagame, bolstered by Qatar Airways' investments in Rwanda, have positioned Qatar as a key player in this complex situation.

Wright's visit to Doha marks his first since his appointment as Energy Secretary in February 2025. He expressed gratitude to Qatari officials for their warm reception and praised the country’s openness in introducing the U.S. delegation to its rich history, culture, and the ongoing development of its energy sector.

As the U.S. and Qatar continue to nurture their strategic partnership, the implications of their collaboration extend far beyond energy. With both nations committed to enhancing economic ties and addressing regional conflicts, the future looks promising for U.S.-Qatar relations.

In conclusion, the ongoing dialogue between the U.S. and Qatar not only reinforces their alliance in energy but also showcases Qatar's growing influence in international diplomacy, particularly in mediating conflicts that require delicate negotiation and understanding.
