Urgent Recall For Dog Treats Due To Salmonella

Salmonella contamination prompts nationwide recall affecting 19 states and urging pet owners to take action

An urgent warning has been issued to dog owners across the United States due to potential salmonella contamination in dog treats. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the recall of specific products from Carolina Prime Pet Inc., affecting 19 states. This precautionary measure was initiated after laboratory tests conducted by third-party inspectors discovered the contamination.

The recalled products are 16-ounce bags of 'Hollywood Feed Carolina Made Chicken Chips', which were sold primarily through Hollywood Feed stores. The states impacted by the recall include Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas. They were also available directly through the company's website.

This recall, taking effect on November 22, highlights the potential risks associated with contaminated dog treats. Currently, there have been no reported cases of illness related to these products. Nonetheless, the FDA emphasizes the importance of monitoring pets and contacting veterinarians if any signs of illness arise.

Salmonella is known for causing severe health problems. Pets infected with the bacteria may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (which can be bloody), vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. Some dogs may only show a decreased appetite and fever. Even more concerning, infected pets can transmit the bacteria to humans, especially if people come in contact with contaminated treats or fail to wash their hands properly after handling them.

For people, salmonella infections can lead to symptoms including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and, in some cases, more serious complications like endocarditis, arthritis, and urinary tract symptoms. Therefore, any human experiencing severe symptoms should seek medical advice.

The specific batch of treats under investigation is marked with lot number 20051324L2 and has an expiration date of November 13, 2025. Pet owners who have purchased these treats should discontinue use immediately and are encouraged to contact Carolina Prime Pet for refunds or replacements. The company can be reached via email at [email protected] or by phone at 828-394-6460 during business hours, which are Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM EST.

This situation raises awareness for all pet owners about the potential dangers of pet food contamination. It is always recommended to stay updated on recalls from trusted sources and monitor any signs of illness closely. The FDA reports will continue to provide updates as they receive more information.

With pet ownership on the rise, it is more important than ever for dog owners to exercise caution when selecting treats for their furry companions. The recall serves as a reminder to everyone about the need for vigilance when it involves the health and safety of pets.
