Germany and Switzerland are gearing up for a spectacular series of equestrian events, with the spotlight primarily on the CHI Basel 2025, scheduled from January 8 to 12. This highly anticipated competition has steadily emerged as one of the premier equestrian gatherings globally, hosting elite riders from various nations and serving as both World Cup qualifier and final venue. The event not only showcases the extraordinary skills of the participating athletes but also features exciting entertainment programs, enhancing the overall experience for spectators.
Thomas Straumann, Chair of the CHI Basel Board, expressed his excitement, stating, "We have a big year ahead of us." This marks the first time the same organizer will host both World Cup events and the final, creating enthusiasm among the equestrian community. The St. Jakobshalle, the venue, is expected to be buzzing with action as it opens its doors for the renowned competitions, including three dressage and seven jumping events.
The CHI Basel will not only feature many of the world's top riders but also vibrant performances during the event. Starting with R&B singer Seven during the opening ceremony, the public can look forward to soul singer Stephanie Heinzmann and the pop band Pegasus entertaining audiences through the four-day event. On the final day, there will be a special ceremony to celebrate the retirement of TSF Dalera, known for its remarkable achievements alongside rider Jessica von Bredow-Werndl.
Prominent riders such as Sweden's Henrik von Eckermann, currently ranked first globally, will compete alongside notable figures like 2024 Olympic champions Ben Maher and Scott Brash from Great Britain, along with other Olympic medalists from various countries. The total achievements of these competitors are staggering, with them collectively totaling 20 Olympic medals, 21 world championship medals, and 47 European championship podium placements.
Among the competitors will be Swiss riders Steve Guerdat and Martin Fuchs. Guerdat, holding the second position worldwide, has previously triumphed at both the Grand Prix and World Cup events held at Basel. Conversely, Fuchs, who has not yet qualified for the final this season, remains fifth on the world ranking list, indicating both promising talent and the competitive spirit of Swiss equestrians.
The Agravis-Cup will also take place concurrently, adding to the excitement of January's equestrian calendar with numerous national and international competitions scheduled. This national dressage and jumping tournament will attract extensive participation and interest, emphasizing the growth and enthusiasm of equestrian sports across the region.
Another notable detail is the prize money at stake during these events, with over one million Swiss Francs available. The prestigious World Cup jump, offering 330,000 Francs, serves as the main attraction, drawing intense competitive energy as participants vie for points and standings affecting their World Cup qualifications.
Even with the excitement building toward both the CHI Basel and Agravis-Cup, roadblocks loom. Some athletes will be absent due to qualifications already secured, and the voltige discipline is not part of the CHI Basel schedule. "The discipline has potential, but does not yet have the same significance as jumping or dressage," Kistler explained, reflecting on the decisions made for the event's programming.
Pre-sale ticket sales for CHI Basel indicate strong public interest, mirroring the stellar attendance figures from the previous year, which saw around 21,000 attendees. Ensuring the success of these equestrian events could also play significantly to the benefit of the host city, Basel, highlighting its status as both vibrant and culturally rich.
With only days leading up to the action-packed schedules of January, the anticipation for the equestrian theme remains palpable. Fans are encouraged to participate and witness these events firsthand, as they signify not only ambition and commitment from the competitors but also unite communities around the passion for equestrian sports.
