CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW/UVA TODAY) – Tim Rose, the long-serving CEO of the University of Virginia Foundation, has announced his retirement effective June 30, 2025. Having been at the helm of the Foundation since 1993, Rose dedicated over three decades to the organization, contributing significantly to its growth and outreach.
Rose’s ties to the University of Virginia (UVA) date back to 1987 when he arrived as a graduate student. Just six years later, he took the leadership role at the Foundation. His experience prior to taking over included serving as Assistant Vice President for Administration at UVA and positions within student affairs at both Miami University and James Madison University. Rose holds degrees from Miami University and earned his Ph.D. from UVA.
Under Rose's leadership, the UVA Foundation has expanded tremendously, overseeing approximately 5,200 acres, which includes key properties like Boar’s Head Resort, Birdwood Golf Course, and Morven Farms. The Foundation plays a pivotal role, not just managing significant real estate assets but also providing financial management assistance for the University’s Capital Campaign.
According to UVA Today, Rose's tenure has been characterized by remarkable growth: "The foundation Rose oversees has grown considerably from its attic space. It now manages more than $1 billion in assets with annual revenues topping $100 million." This growth reflects both the organization's strength and Rose's effective stewardship.
Recent projects spearheaded by the Foundation include the purchase of around 14.5 acres within the Emmet-Ivy Corridor, which is now the site of the new School of Data Science. This facility not only showcases the University's commitment to innovation but is accompanied by future plans for the Virginia Guest House, which is set to become a 214-room hotel and conference center with 25,000 square feet of meeting space, including amenities like a full-service restaurant and a rooftop venue.
Another significant development is the upcoming Karsh Institute of Democracy, which is under construction and will encompass 65,000 square feet. Its completion is anticipated next year, which promises to bolster the Foundation’s impact within the educational community.
Looking toward the future, the University and the Foundation will undoubtedly face challenges as they transition to new leadership. The search for Rose’s successor will be closely watched by community members and stakeholders alike, all eager to see how the Foundation will continue its mission of supporting the University and its surrounding community.
Rose’s retirement marks not just the end of an era but also sets the stage for future endeavors at the UVA Foundation. His contributions have left an indelible mark, and as he prepares for this next chapter, the Foundation stands on solid ground, ready to pursue new opportunities and expansions.
