A fatal collision on the Waldir Canevari highway (SP-355/330) claimed the lives of 12 students from the Universidade de Franca (Unifran) and left 19 injured on the night of February 20, 2025. The bus, which was transporting students back to São Joaquim da Barra, collided with a truck around 22h, between the municipalities of Nuporanga and São José da Bela Vista, located approximately 17 km from Nuporanga.
The tragic accident is believed to have occurred following the bus taking an alternative route due to road construction. The regular highway, known as the Prefeito Fábio Talarico road (SP-435), was closed for repairs on a bridge, forcing the bus onto the Waldir Canevari highway, which is not typically used for such transit. Eyewitness reports indicate the truck possibly veered across the road’s center line before impact, devastating the bus mainly on its left side, where most impacted passengers were seated.
First responders, including the Corpo de Bombeiros (Firefighters), received the emergency call just after 22h55, and multiple rescue teams arrived to assist the victims. A total of 33 individuals were treated for injuries at local medical facilities, with most receiving immediate care at the Santa Casa of São Joaquim da Barra and the Hospital São Geraldo in Nuporanga. Fortunately, all injured have since received medical clearance and returned home.
The fatalities include students, aged between 17 and 23, among whom were João Pedro Oliveira dos Reis, Lívia Tavares, and Hugo dos Santos. Each represented the dreams and aspirations of youth tragically cut short. Relatives and faculty of the university expressed deep sorrow over their loss, with the university administration declaring three days of official mourning and canceling classes on February 21.
"It is with great sadness and sorrow we received the news of our students having their dreams interrupted by this tragic accident," stated the university's announcement through their official channels. They confirmed the availability of psychological support for those affected by the event.
The truck driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time of the crash, was taken to the local police station for questioning. Authorities confirmed he faces multiple charges, including homicide and failing to assist those injured after the collision. Initial investigations suggest he attempted to flee the scene, hiding nearby before he was apprehended.
This accident brings to light the pressing issue of road safety, especially concerning the transportation of students and the condition of regional roads. While the road on which the crash occurred is monitored by local authorities, the tragic consequences of this incident raise questions about the adequacy of safety measures and the responsibilities of transport operators.
The Atlética Unificada, the student sports body of Unifran, publicly lamented the incident, stating, "We deeply regret the tragic accident involving our students. Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and all affected by this tragedy. May they find strength and comfort during this time of deep sorrow."
With the investigation still underway, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light not only on the circumstances surrounding the crash but also the broader discussion on road safety and students' well-being across the region.
Onlookers shared images of the horrifying aftermath on social media, capturing the wreckage and the heroic efforts of responders. The local community is urged to come together to support the families of the victims and the survivors of this life-altering tragedy.
