Universal Studios Japan Targets Growth With New Attractions

The park prepares to open iconic franchises to attract more visitors and increase guest experiences.

Universal Studios Japan (USJ), located in Osaka, is gearing up for significant developments as it seeks to maintain its standing as one of the top theme parks worldwide. With impressive rankings placing it third globally for visitor numbers, USJ is continuously innovativing to draw in more guests. Key among its new strategies is the opening of several highly anticipated attractions set for 2024, including installations inspired by popular franchises like 'Detective Conan' and 'Donkey Kong.'

The 'Detective Conan' attraction is scheduled to open on March 22, 2024, and marks USJ's first permanent installation based on this beloved anime, which includes 106 volumes of manga and has captivated audiences for decades. The state-of-the-art experience features a massive 40-meter screen and immersive live-action elements based on original stories, delivering thrills to both devoted fans and newcomers alike. The excitement is already palpable, as guests eagerly anticipate what promises to be an engaging tribute to the iconic detective series.

Following this, the 'Donkey Kong Country' area is slated for launch on December 11, 2024, and will expand the attractions within the already popular Super Nintendo World. This new section builds on the success of 2021’s opening of Super Nintendo World, which remains extremely popular, requiring timed entry tickets. The 'Donkey Kong' area will introduce guests to thrilling new rides such as 'Donkey Kong's Crazy Cart,' which simulates the adventurous spirit of the classic games, complete with jungle settings and interactive features.

According to the Theme Entertainment Association (TEA), USJ has experienced remarkable growth, with visitor numbers reportedly surging by 30% compared to 2022. This upward trend can largely be attributed to the park's continuous strategy of enhancing guest experience through innovative attractions and offerings. "Our continual evolution is key to maintaining top visitor numbers globally," stated representatives during the recent announcement, reinforcing the park's commitment to guest satisfaction.

To support these new attractions and improve overall visitor services, USJ has dedicated efforts to bolster its workforce. Starting April 2024, USJ will raise hourly wages for part-time and temporary crew members by 50 yen, rising from 1160 yen to 1210 yen. This adjustment aims to attract more personnel who can cater to the increasing number of international guests visiting the theme park.

USJ is also stepping up by hiring foreign crew members, which is pivotal as the park anticipates continued growth in inbound tourism. According to reports, around 230 foreign crew members are expected to be employed throughout 2024, with 160 being directly hired and 70 through working holiday programs. This recruitment reflects USJ's recognition of changing demographics and its dedication to creating a culturally diverse workforce.

Foreign staff, including those from Taiwan, will bring multilingual capacities to the park, enhancing communication and interaction with guests from around the world. This service improvement aims to deliver experiences tied closely to the international themes of many attractions, solidifying USJ's reputation as a premier destination.

While USJ receives high praise for its new offerings, there are voices of nostalgia expressing concerns over the shifting focus away from classic elements. Some visitors have remarked on experiences lost to transitions, longing for aspects of beloved attractions like 'Back to the Future,' which closed its ride back in 2016. This feedback indicates the need for USJ to balance innovation with the cherished traditions its visitors hold dear.

Looking to the future, USJ has boldly stated its intention to embrace trends and guest preferences, promising to innovate continually. The plans for 2025 include the first introduction of Japanese anime attractions to Universal Studios Hollywood, showing USJ's influence extending beyond Japan.

USJ's strategic efforts not only reflect its aspirations to lead the global entertainment industry but also demonstrate its adaptability to the ever-changing entertainment market. Through constant reinvention, USJ has successfully drawn increasing visitor numbers, becoming renowned not only as one of Japan's top theme parks but as one of the leading destinations worldwide.

With so many changes underway, excitement mounts for what awaits guests at USJ. The park eagerly anticipates inserting even more captivating adventures and unparalleled experiences to keep visitors returning for more, always with the hope of one day capturing the coveted title of the world’s number one theme park.
