The sharp descent happened three times, causing some people to sustain injuries. We spent four hours in the air. Amid the turmoil, the pilot said we were going to land in Ghana, but we eventually landed in Nigeria," the passenger reported to Vanguard.

Following the landing, United Airlines issued statements attributing the emergency to technical issues. "Flight UA613 from Lagos to Washington D.C. returned to Lagos to address a technical issue. After landing safely, the aircraft was met by first responders to address reports of minor injuries to several passengers and crew," the airline confirmed.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) highlighted the swift response of its emergency teams, stating, "A team of Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services was already at the gate when the aeroplane parked for deboarding. All passengers and crew disembarked safely, but four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries. An additional 27 passengers and five crew members had minor injuries." Rescue protocols were activated within minutes of the distress call at 01:20.

Micheal Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at Nigeria's Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), confirmed the agency is investigating the incident. "We are investigating the incident. We have received the Flight Data Recorder to ascertain exactly what happened. We want to know exactly what happened," Achimugu assured, emphasizing the importance of objective analysis over anecdotal reports.
