Uniqlo Survey Reveals Urban Discomfort Amidst Heat

Findings show how unpredictable weather impacts comfort and work efficiency for city dwellers

In a recent survey conducted by Uniqlo, a leading global apparel brand, findings reveal significant concerns among urban dwellers regarding the effects of unpredictable weather on comfort and work efficiency. The survey, which included over 7,000 participants from seven major cities worldwide, including Bangkok, London, Paris, New York, Shanghai, Seoul, and Tokyo, highlights the pressing issue of discomfort caused by heat and humidity, impacting both daily life and productivity.

The survey results indicate that a staggering 82% of respondents in Bangkok express anxiety when feeling sticky or uncomfortable in their clothing. Moreover, around 80% report experiencing negative effects related to heat more than ever before, such as headaches, fatigue, and even sleep disturbances. This discomfort often leads to irritability, with approximately 50% of participants admitting that they become moody when sweating during commutes.

Furthermore, the impact of uncomfortable clothing extends into the workplace, where 42% of Bangkok respondents acknowledge that their work quality diminishes when they feel uneasy in their attire. The findings underscore the importance of breathable fabrics and comfortable clothing options, particularly in a climate characterized by high temperatures and humidity.

Globally, the survey reveals that 86% of participants agree that weather conditions in their cities have become increasingly unpredictable. Two-thirds of respondents find it challenging to maintain comfort throughout the day, with 56% of those aged 25 to 34 reporting that they have changed or canceled plans due to discomfort from sweating.

Uniqlo’s AIRism line, designed to combat heat-related discomfort, has emerged as a critical solution for urban residents. The survey shows that 64% of respondents believe that wearing breathable clothing significantly alleviates their worries about sweating, while 59% prioritize breathable fabrics when choosing their outfits. Additionally, 55% value lightweight clothing, and 48% focus on selecting lightweight materials.

The concept of capsule wardrobes—clothing that can be worn year-round without seasonal changes—also gained traction among respondents. This trend reflects a growing desire for versatile and functional pieces that cater to the unpredictability of urban weather.

In Bangkok, the emphasis on comfort is palpable. The survey highlights that 70% of respondents prioritize clothing that is comfortable for commuting, while 76% consider style and functionality essential. Kana Koga, head of Women’s Intimate Apparel at Uniqlo, stated, "Sweat is a source of stress for everyone worldwide, especially during the sweltering summer months. Since 2007, Uniqlo has pioneered performance underwear that helps mitigate discomfort from sweating, and since the launch of AIRism in 2012, we have continuously developed items to meet our customers' needs.”

Moreover, Yukihiro Katsuta, President of Fast Retailing and head of R&D at Uniqlo, added, "Given the prolonged periods of warm weather in winter and extreme heat waves worldwide, we believe that effective underwear like AIRism will gain popularity. We are committed to further developing our LifeWear products to ensure customers can enjoy their daily lives comfortably in any weather.”

As the survey results illustrate, the relationship between clothing choices and emotional well-being is increasingly recognized. The findings reveal that 63% of respondents feel they can better handle stressful situations when dressed comfortably, while 35% prefer classic designs over trendy fashions to reduce their environmental impact.

In conclusion, the implications of this survey extend beyond mere clothing preferences; they reflect a broader societal shift towards prioritizing comfort and functionality in everyday attire. As urban dwellers navigate the challenges posed by unpredictable weather, brands like Uniqlo are responding with innovative solutions that cater to the evolving needs of consumers. The AIRism collection, available at Uniqlo stores and online, represents a significant step in addressing these concerns while enhancing the overall quality of life for city residents.
