Unibet, the online gambling platform operated by Optdeck Service Limited, has been slapped with a hefty fine of 400,000 euros by the Dutch Gambling Authority (Ksa). This enforcement action stems from Unibet's failure to comply with regulations governing player exclusions under the Cruks system, which is pivotal for safeguarding individuals from gambling addiction.
The reason for this punitive measure surfaced during the excitement of the 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar when the Ksa was alerted to the fact Unibet had permitted users with active exclusions to gamble. According to the Ksa, these players were registered with Cruks, which allows individuals to voluntarily exclude themselves from participating in both online and physical gambling venues across providers with Dutch licenses. The agency mandated operators to check this register rigorously before allowing new players to engage.
This disruption not only violates the established guidelines but also undermines the protective measures intended for players at risk of gambling addiction. The enforcement action against Unibet coincides with other significant occurrences within the Dutch gambling industry. The Ksa announced it has received withdrawal requests from two other companies: LiveScore Malta Limited, known for LiveScore Bet, and Tombola International Malta PLC. These withdrawals mean these companies can no longer legally offer online gambling services within the Dutch market.
Unlike Unibet, Casino.nl, and Betcity, the involved parties have now been rendered unable to operate, emphasizing the Ksa's commitment to maintaining regulatory standards as the online gambling market evolves.
