Undecided Voters Could Shift 2024 Election Outcomes

Young voters from rural areas are feeling overlooked and could decisively impact the 2024 presidential race

The 2024 presidential election is gaining momentum, and with it, the spotlight is on undecided voters—especially the young folks who seem to be caught between two worlds: their hopes for change and their disillusionment with the political system.

Recent studies reveal what many may have suspected; the key battlegrounds for this upcoming election might just rest on the shoulders of younger, rural voters who feel neglected by the political machine. According to research from the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), young individuals—often described as the least contacted and most undecided demographic—could play a pivotal role come November.

Engagement efforts aimed at these voters are ramping up. Michael Chameides, the communications director of the Rural Democracy Initiative, emphasizes the importance of tailoring outreach efforts so they resonate deeply with their peers. He notes, "There’s this huge opportunity to engage with young people [and] to give them the opportunities to learn more about the system and make their mark." This sentiment rings especially true when considering the potential for youth to influence significant election outcomes, which they did during the 2022 midterms when they made up 10% to 15% of the total votes cast.

What does this mean for the candidates hoping to woo these young voters? Well, it means focusing on grassroots initiatives, local leadership, and community engagement. Projects initiated by organizations like the Rural Youth Voter Fund serve as blueprints for effective outreach. These initiatives are relationship-focused and depend heavily on creating environments where young people feel their voices matter. Chameides highlighted this by referencing events like skateboarding gatherings where participants not only enjoy recreational activities but also have opportunities to discuss civic involvement. "A lot of people are driven by a certain desire to make their lives and their families' lives—make their community's lives—better," he explains.

But barriers still remain. One major hurdle is the lack of accessible spaces for engagement, particularly within rural communities. CIRCLE points out significant gaps where young voters often feel there aren’t adequate venues to discuss civic issues or engage with the information needed for informed voting. This disconnect correlates with lower turnout rates, too. When comparing voter turnout between urban and rural youths aged 18 to 29, research indicates just 44% of rural youth participated, compared to 52% of their urban counterparts.

Alejandro Rangel-Lopez, who serves as campaign manager for New Frontiers, is on the front lines trying to bridge this engagement gap. His work focuses on empowering young people in Southwest Kansas, particularly through informal gatherings held at community hubs like coffee shops and community centers. Rangel-Lopez understands the importance of grounding discussions around issues relevant to their immediate surroundings, especially considering the unique needs and challenges faced by these rural youth.

While younger voters are slowly gaining attention, the media narrative often shifts back to discussing “traditional” swing voters, mainly focusing on middle-class Americans and neglecting those who may be struggling with economic hardship. Articles from major news outlets tend to overlook the significant presence of low-income voters, failing to examine their experiences or the issues they care about. It’s as if the conversation around undecided voters has become simplistic, defined mainly by demographics and not by needs.

For example, as highlighted by Subramaniam Vincent from the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics, coverage during debates tends to exclude words like “poverty” or “economic struggle,” choosing instead to rely heavily on buzzwords tied to the middle-class experience. This oversight can be detrimental when considering the importance of all voices, particularly as they pertain to underrepresented populations. The 2024 race is especially vulnerable to shifts among low-income voters; if these voices remain on the sidelines, the impact on election outcomes could be substantial.

Moving forward, candidates must amplify these voices and engage inclusively. The challenge lies not just with capturing votes but doing so by actively reaching out and forming connections. This isn’t just about ticking boxes or filling seats; it’s about energizing diverse populations across various spectrums of income. It is, after all, the voices of these young, undeterred voters who may very well steer the ship of the upcoming election.

So, what's next? It’s anticipated these voters will become increasingly prominent as we edge closer to November. Candidate campaigns may need to intensify their outreach efforts to this group through relatable messaging, effective dialogue, and, hopefully, engaging voters on their turf.

At present, the dynamics have positioned young voters as powerful game-changers. Their participation might not only tilt the scales for one candidate but could also redefine how campaigns approach voter engagement going forward. The narrative surrounding undecided voters is shifting, and as it evolves, so too must the strategies of those vying for their support. The question now is whether the candidates can catch up to the voices echoing from the forgotten corners of the rural heartland.

Meanwhile, Samantha Bee has statistically spoken to the frustrations surrounding undecided voters, calling out the drama surrounding them. Bee argues these so-called “drama queens” of undecided voters garner way too much attention, and claims it distracts from the issues at hand. Her comedic take reminds us not to overlook the real concerns faced by millions who live on the economic margins.
