Uncertain Weather Ahead For May Holiday Weekend

As a DANA threatens to bring rain and cooler temperatures, travelers are advised to stay updated on forecasts.

The May holiday weekend in Spain is shaping up to be a mixed bag, with predictions of both warm weather and potential rain as a new DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos) threatens to disrupt plans. The Agencia Estatal de Meteorología (AEMET) has released its forecast for the upcoming weeks, indicating that the weather will start stable but could shift dramatically by the end of the holiday.

According to AEMET, the week from April 28 to May 4, 2025, will begin with stable weather across much of Spain. Expect little rain and rising temperatures, with many areas likely to experience values above the seasonal average. This pleasant weather is particularly welcome for those planning to kick off their May Day holidays early, enjoying sun-soaked days before the potential shift.

However, the forecast is not all sunshine. As the week progresses, AEMET warns of a possible storm system forming in the Atlantic, which could significantly alter weather conditions during the latter part of the May holiday weekend, particularly from Thursday, May 2 to Sunday, May 5. Regions such as Galicia, Castilla y León, and Extremadura could face the brunt of these changes, with increased rainfall expected if the storm system moves closer to the Peninsula.

Mario Picazo, a meteorologist, has echoed these sentiments, suggesting that while the weekend of April 26-27 will be dominated by high pressure, rain is likely in the northern parts of the country. He cautioned that the May holiday weekend could see widespread rain if the DANA materializes as predicted. Roberto Granada from elTiempo.es also noted that the uncertainty surrounding the weather forecasts is significant, with various scenarios still on the table, ranging from continued stability to severe weather disruptions.

Looking ahead to the week of May 5 to May 11, AEMET anticipates a thermal pattern consistent with the season. The Mediterranean and Balearic regions may continue to enjoy above-average temperatures, while the southwest could see somewhat cooler conditions. There is also a chance of increased rainfall in the north and west of the Peninsula, although the reliability of this forecast diminishes as the dates approach.

In the Canary Islands, the situation differs. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly below normal for this time of year, with no significant rainfall anticipated. This regional variation highlights the complexity of the weather patterns affecting Spain as the DANA approaches.

As we approach the much-anticipated puente de mayo, many are left wondering how to prepare for the unpredictable weather. The AEMET emphasizes the need for caution in interpreting long-term forecasts, as conditions can change rapidly. While the initial days of the holiday may bring warmth and sunshine, travelers should remain vigilant for updates and be ready to adapt their plans should the weather take a turn for the worse.

Given the current meteorological trends, it’s wise for those planning outdoor activities to keep an eye on weather reports and be prepared for all possibilities. Whether it’s packing an umbrella or planning for a sunny picnic, flexibility will be key to enjoying the holiday.
