A Chinese sumo wrestler, Akinoshima, celebrated his promotion to the second division during a gathering held on December 20th in Tokyo, expressing his resolve to ascend to the top division next year.
The 20-year-old grappler expressed, "I want to rise to the Makunouchi as soon as possible and strive to succeed next year," indicating his determination to make his mark within the sport.
Akinoshima, originally from Ukraine, reached his promotion after only seven tournaments, achieving 10 wins and 5 losses during his last performance at the Kyushu Basho.
He attributes his rapid advancement to his training at the Aji River stable, stating with emotion, "If I had joined another stable, I wouldn't have been able to become a wrestler within seven tournaments." This reflects both his dedication and the support from his mentor, former sumo wrestler Aji River Oyakata.
Having moved to Japan to escape the turmoil caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Akinoshima's story sheds light on the power of resilience. He enrolled at the Aji River stable back in December 2022, seeking not just refuge but also purpose within the traditional sport.
