Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled another Russian assault intended to capture the strategically significant city of Kupiansk, located in Kharkiv Oblast. According to the General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces, Russian military units aimed to break through Ukrainian defenses but were met with fierce resistance, resulting in significant losses for the attackers.
Kupiansk, which has changed hands several times since the start of the invasion, serves as a key logistics and transportation hub. Captured by Russian forces during their initial invasion phases back in February 2022, it was retaken by Ukraine later during their successful counteroffensive later the same year. The city remains pivotal due to its network of highways and railways, which are critically important for military supply routes.
Reports indicate the Russian forces utilized various tactics during their assault, including attacking during nighttime and deploying soldiers dressed in Ukrainian uniforms, which the Ukrainian military highlighted as violations of international warfare regulations. This practice of disguising their troops was met with condemnation, as it creates confusion on the battlefield and endangers both civilian lives and Ukrainian soldiers.
Andrii Kovalev, spokesperson for the General Staff, confirmed the attacks were thwarted and asserted, "All Russian attacks in this direction were successfully repelled. The assault began at approximately 2:30 PM local time, with Russian attackers launching their offensive using 15 armored vehicles, including tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.
