Ukraine Pushing For Long-Range Missiles Against Russia

Zelenskyy seeks US support for strikes deep within Russian territory

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has taken yet another dramatic turn as Ukraine seeks to bolster its military capabilities with long-range missiles. These advanced weapons could allow Ukrainian forces to strike deep within Russian territory, potentially reshaping the dynamics of the prolonged war. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has recently expressed optimism about gaining authorization from Western allies, especially the United States, to use these missiles against Russian military targets.

During pivotal discussions at the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy outlined his nation's urgent need to target Russian bases responsible for launching devastating airstrikes on Ukrainian cities. The stakes are incredibly high: as Ukraine gears up to strike back against Russia, President Putin has warned NATO countries about the risks of engaging directly with Russian territory.

Currently, Ukraine possesses Western-supplied long-range precision weapons, including the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) and Storm Shadow missiles from the UK and SCALP missiles from France. These weapons can reach targets several hundred miles away, but their effective engagement requires precise targeting capabilities, which only the Pentagon can provide. This limitation hampers their full potential and complicates Ukraine's strategic decision-making.

Zelenskyy's government aims to not only defend its homeland but also to pressure Russia by implementing strikes against military installations well within Russian borders. These actions may lead to higher operational costs and logistical hurdles for the Russian military, forcing them to reposition their assets and potentially reevaluate their approach.

While discussions are underway to lift restrictions for Ukraine to use these Western long-range weapons effectively, these deliberations are fraught with caution. The Biden administration has faced substantial challenges trying to balance its support for Ukraine against concerns about dragging NATO allies directly back to war. Recently, concerns heightened with Putin's stark warnings about the possible use of nuclear weapons should NATO cross established boundaries.

Experts are divided on the ramifications of allowing Ukraine to utilize long-range missiles. Some argue it could serve as the decisive blow necessary to tilt the balance of power, allowing Ukraine to target military installations and disrupt Russian operations. Fred Kagan, from the American Enterprise Institute, explained, "The more the Ukrainians are able to strike these military targets, the more countermeasures Russia has to deploy, which diminishes the effectiveness of their military action."

Historically, short-range munitions have been used by Ukraine to successfully incapacitate Russian command posts and supply depots, forcing Russia to alter its positioning. With long-range missiles, Ukraine aims to extend its reach and impact core military infrastructure. This could disrupt Russia's air operations, as they would have to move command posts and other facilities such distances from the front lines, resulting in longer logistics chains and potentially slower operational capabilities.

The notion of using Western long-range missiles has not been without controversy. Military experts point to the reality of limited supplies, with such munitions allocated primarily for Ukraine, which could detract from U.S. capabilities if conflicts arise elsewhere, such as with North Korea or China. While some officials argue this reality should temper supply decisions, others contend it should not stifle the urgent support Ukraine needs to turn the tide of war.

Meanwhile, the European Union has made clear their commitment to backing Ukraine, regardless of Russia’s nuclear rhetoric. The narrative is being driven by Zelenskyy's belief and insistence on Ukraine's ability to use such weapons solely against military targets, distinguishing their intent from provocations toward broader escalations.

This insistence reflects Ukraine's desire not only for justice but also for maintaining global support. Ukrainian officials believe Western leaders need to understand the precarious position Ukraine holds against overwhelming odds, demanding clarity and action from their allies to aid their quest for freedom.

Discussions surrounding Ukraine’s requests have continued, increasing expectations of changes before winter sets in. Should Western leaders grant Ukraine the authority to go on the offensive with long-range strikes, it could reshape not only the battlefield but also the geopolitical chessboard surrounding NATO responses and international relations.

While the future remains uncertain, one thing is for sure: the dynamics of the Ukraine-Russia conflict are rapidly shifting, and decisions made by Western officials will determine not only the fate of this war but also the security of Europe as challenges continue to loom on the horizon.
