UK Weather Shift Brings Rain And High Pollen Alerts

As warmer weather signals hay fever season, millions brace for worsening symptoms and changing conditions.

The Met Office has signalled an end to the recent "wall-to-wall sunshine" the UK has been enjoying in recent weeks. On the near horizon is the arrival of rain and a dip in temperatures – disappointing for some but a relief for others. Farmers, growers, gardeners, and firefighters will all welcome the rain. However, perhaps those most looking forward to the change in weather are Britain’s 10 million hay fever sufferers.

Forecasters have warned that hay fever sufferers may experience worsening symptoms this weekend due to high pollen counts. On Saturday, April 12, 2025, "very high" birch and ash pollen levels were recorded across Wales, prompting the Met Office to issue a red warning, its highest level of pollen alert. Similar alerts were in place across seven regions in England.

By Sunday, April 13, pollen levels in Wales are expected to drop to "medium" as weather conditions change. However, this relief may be short-lived; by Tuesday, April 15, pollen levels are forecast to rise again, with amber "High" alerts issued for mid-week. Red "Very High" levels will persist in southeast England over the next five days.

For those seeking geographical relief, the far north of Scotland will see "Low" pollen levels. Some research suggests that Wales has the highest proportion of hay fever sufferers in the UK, supported by Google Trends data. The country’s lush green landscapes, particularly in summer, may contribute to higher concentrations of grass pollen than other regions.

When inhaled, fine powder-like pollen triggers antibodies that create mucus, leading to symptoms such as congestion, sneezing, a runny nose, itchy eyes, and an itchy throat, mouth, nose, and ears. Late spring to early summer is often the most challenging season for sufferers.

With the UK experiencing warmer-than-average weather in recent days, the 2025 hay fever season appears to have arrived early. On sunny days, the pollen count typically peaks in the early evening, a time when hay fever symptoms are most likely to strike. However, the arrival of wind and rain doesn’t always provide instant relief, as these conditions can dislodge pollen settled on leaves and other surfaces.

According to the Met Office, Sunday, April 13, 2025, will be a "mainly dry day" in Wales, with just a few isolated light showers expected. However, it will feel much cooler compared to recent days, with brisk westerly winds. Temperatures are predicted to remain "around or just above average" for Monday, April 14, to Wednesday, April 16, 2025, which will feature a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers, some of which may be heavy.

Looking ahead, the Met Office's mid-range forecast for Wales, covering the period from Wednesday, April 16 to Friday, April 25, indicates that much more mixed weather conditions are on the way. Low-pressure systems and associated rain and showers are expected to frequently affect the UK. Rain may be heavy at times, particularly in western areas, and showers could be heavy and blustery, with isolated small hail and thunder.

Despite the unsettled weather, there will be some brighter, drier spells in between the rain and showers, although large amounts of cloud are likely to limit sunshine. Unsettled, wet, and occasionally windy conditions are expected during the first few days of this period. Beyond this, there is an increasing chance that cooler, northerly winds could develop, leading to a less unsettled spell, with temperatures mostly around average for this time of year.

As the Met Office continues to monitor these conditions, it stresses the importance of being aware of pollen levels, especially for those affected by hay fever. The red alert issued on April 13 serves as a stark reminder of how quickly weather patterns can shift, impacting millions across the country.

Met Office meteorologist Dan Stroud noted, "The average for this time of year is around 13C, so it's going to be about 10C above average on Friday, April 18, 2025." This indicates a significant warm spell for the UK, which could further exacerbate pollen levels and hay fever symptoms.

As the weather continues to evolve, it is crucial for individuals, particularly those with allergies, to stay informed and prepared. Whether it's through taking preventative measures or simply being aware of the weather changes, staying one step ahead can make a significant difference in managing hay fever symptoms during this peak season.
