UK Towns Unite To Celebrate 80th VE Day Anniversary

Communities across the country honor the end of World War II with events and remembrance activities.

This weekend, towns across the UK are set to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a series of events that celebrate the end of World War II in Europe. From music performances to community gatherings, the spirit of remembrance and celebration will be felt in various locations, including Kenilworth, Morecambe, and Gloucester.

In Kenilworth, the festivities kick off on Thursday, May 8, 2025, with a significant event at Kenilworth Castle. The Kenilworth Town Council has organized a commemorative gathering from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM featuring a service by the Royal British Legion. Attendees can expect performances by local school choirs, a piper, and the lighting of a beacon in one of the castle's towers. Over 100 local children will participate in this free event, marking a poignant moment in the town's history as it joins others across the nation in honoring VE Day.

Additionally, live music will return to Kenilworth on Saturday, May 10, with the folk group Romany Pie, accompanied by vocalist Angie Collins, performing at St Nicholas Church. The concert promises to be a delightful evening filled with folk music in a beautiful acoustic setting.

On the same day, a special VE Day Market will take place in Knowle, organized by CJ's Events Warwickshire. The market will offer an array of arts, crafts, local produce, and delicious street food, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with live entertainment. The event aims to bring the community together to celebrate and support local traders.

Further south, Devon and Cornwall are also marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day with a variety of events. On May 8, 1945, at precisely 15:00 BST, Sir Winston Churchill announced Nazi Germany's surrender, a moment that resonates deeply today. In Plymouth, a flag-raising ceremony and gun salute will take place at the Belvedere at 11:30 AM, followed by a parade on Plymouth Hoe. The day will feature live music from 11:00 AM, leading up to an evening concert at 5:30 PM, ensuring that the celebrations are filled with joy and remembrance.

In Brixham, a parade will commence at 10:45 AM, leading to a wreath-laying ceremony at the local war memorial, while Truro will host a similar service at 11:00 AM. St Ives will also participate with its own wreath-laying ceremony at the same time. The day will culminate in a nationwide bell ringing at 6:30 PM, followed by beacon lighting across the country at 9:30 PM.

Morecambe, in the Lancaster district, will hold its own commemorative events on May 8. The day will begin with a flag-raising ceremony at Morecambe Town Hall at 11:00 AM, featuring the official VE Day Proclamation by Town Crier Michael Glen. Rev. Chris Krawiez will deliver a short sermon, followed by a reception for veterans and their families. Later in the evening, the Morecambe Brass Band will perform a concert titled "And Then There Was Peace," showcasing music from various historical conflicts.

The evening will conclude with a beacon-lighting ceremony at 9:30 PM, coinciding with similar events across the nation, and the traditional sounding of The Last Post at approximately 10:00 PM.

Carnforth is also gearing up for a day filled with community spirit. The town council invites residents to decorate their spaces with poppies and bunting, creating a vibrant display in honor of the occasion. The schedule includes a flag-raising ceremony at 9:00 AM, followed by a community choir performance and the lighting of a beacon at 9:30 PM, which will be accompanied by a short service and the hymn "I Vow to Thee, My Country." Councillor Ian Laurence emphasized the importance of remembrance, stating, "VE Day is not just a day of remembrance; it is a celebration of peace and resilience. Together, we can ensure that their legacy lives on in our hearts and actions."

In Lancaster, the day's schedule features a flag-raising ceremony in Dalton Square at 10:45 AM, followed by a VE Day tea party at Lancaster Library at 1:30 PM. Sandylands School will host its own celebration with music and dancing from 3:15 PM to 5:00 PM, ensuring that the younger generation is also engaged in the commemorative activities.

On Friday, May 9, a celebration of VE Day will continue with songs from Beyond Radio's Miss Harri Deane at The Pier Hotel in Morecambe at 5:30 PM.

In Gloucester, a VE Day Tea Dance is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, at Kings Square from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. This free event will feature live music from the swing band Moonlighting, alongside VE Day-themed music. Dignitaries, including the local MP and Mayor, will be present to show their support for this community-oriented celebration. Proceeds from refreshments will benefit the Pied Piper Appeal, which supports children in Gloucestershire.

Lastly, Lymm Parish Council is inviting residents to a VE Day commemoration at the Lower Dam, featuring a piper and a beacon lighting at 9:30 PM. The event will include a performance from the 1940s trio The Bel Canto Vintage Singers, and road closures will be in effect to accommodate the festivities. A special VE Day anniversary program featuring local care home residents will air on Sunday, May 11, sharing personal stories of World War II and how communities celebrated the victory.

These events across the UK highlight not only the historical significance of VE Day but also the importance of community spirit and remembrance. As towns and cities come together to celebrate, the legacy of those who fought for freedom continues to resonate, ensuring that the sacrifices made during World War II are never forgotten.
