UK Military Launches First Satellite Tyche

New satellite signals UK's strategic push for advanced military technology and collaboration

The UK has successfully launched its first military satellite, Tyche, marking a significant milestone for the British Armed Forces. This pivotal launch showcases the UK Space Command's commitment to advancing military capabilities through innovative technology.

Launched from Vandenberg Space Force Base, California, using SpaceX's reusable Falcon 9 rocket, Tyche weighs about 150 kilograms. This development, undertaken by Surrey Satellite Technology Limited (SSTL), supports around 100 high-skilled jobs within the UK.

Maria Eagle, the Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, expressed pride over Tyche's launch, indicating its dual role. "Tyche will provide critical intelligence for military operations as well as supporting wider tasks across government," she stated.

UK Space Commander Major General Paul Tedman echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the successful collaboration with defense and private sectors. "The successful launch of Tyche has shown our ability to transform concepts swiftly from idea to orbit."
