UK Implements Stricter Age Verification Under Online Safety Act

Ofcom pushes social media giants to employ advanced facial recognition tech to protect minors online.

The UK is gearing up for significant changes to how online platforms verify the ages of their users, sparked by the upcoming implementation of the Online Safety Act. Starting from January, Ofcom, the country's communications regulator, will set forth requirements mandatorily demanding compliance from social media platforms to enforce age verification.

Ofcom's Online Safety Policy Director, Jon Higham, indicated these measures are expected to deliver "highly accurate" verification methods, possibly involving facial recognition technology. This move aims to prevent minors from accessing platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok, especially as reports suggest children are often faking their ages to create online profiles.

Higham made clear during interviews the necessity of improved age verification systems, stating, "unless tech firms improve age verification, the UK could move to ban users younger than 16 from social media." The stakes are high, as social media companies are tasked with implementing technology capable of effectively distinguishing between adult and child users.

Other firms, such as Yoti, are already working on solutions involving AI-driven facial age estimation. This technology analyzes users’ selfies—either through real-time uploads or via API integration—with the goal of assessing their age accurately without compromising their privacy. Such methodologies are positioned as less invasive compared to conventional methods requiring government-issued IDs.

Despite the promise of these technologies, concerns persist. Users need to trust tech companies not only with their biometric data but also to assure them of the immediate deletion of any images taken during the verification process. Non-compliance with the Online Safety Act may lead to harsh penalties, including fines of up to 10% of global sales revenue, or even prison sentences of up to two years for executives.

By April, Ofcom is expected to finalize its recommendations, urging platforms to employ these accurate facial recognition checks, especially as previous research revealed alarming statistics on child smartphone ownership—24% of children aged five to seven now have their own devices.

The introduction of these safeguards stems from worrying trends showing how children have manipulated age requirements to gain access to social media, proving the urgent need for stringent controls. The measures under the Online Safety Act reflect broader global conversations around online safety and the obligations tech companies hold toward protecting younger users from inappropriate content.

With societal pressures mounting on children and parents alike to navigate such complex technological landscapes, the responsibilities of tech firms have never been clearer. Will these new regulations truly change how children interact online, or are they just another layer of bureaucracy on top of an already convoluted digital world? Only time will tell.
