UK Faces Changeable Weather Ahead Of Easter Weekend

Heavy rain and weather warnings prompt travelers to prepare for disruptions during the holiday.

Weather warnings remain in place as parts of the UK continue to be hit by heavy rain ahead of the Easter weekend. On Tuesday, April 15, 2025, the Met Office warned travelers to check the weather before leaving their homes after they issued two yellow weather warnings for rain. The first warning started at 12pm on Tuesday and is in place until midday today, stretching from the southern tip of the Cornish coast, covering all of Wales and some parts of the West Country, the West Midlands, and the northwest.

Meanwhile, eastern parts of Northern Ireland have been issued with a yellow weather warning for rain until 9pm on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. Whitechurch in west Wales saw a staggering 50.2mm of rain on Tuesday, with the Met Office predicting that some places covered by the warning could see up to 75mm while it is in place. Persistent rain, which will be heavy at times, is expected to develop throughout the day, with most of the warning area seeing 20-30mm. However, high ground in County Antrim and County Down could see 50-60mm before the rain eases from the west during the evening.

While the warning indicates that flooding is possible, chief meteorologist Matthew Lehnert reassured the public that "significant impacts are not anticipated" following recent dry weather. Nonetheless, the Environment Agency has issued a flood warning on the River Torridge between Dolton and Bideford in Devon. As of Wednesday morning, there are 14 alerts in place across the southeast, Devon, and Cornwall.

The Met Office warns those in the yellow warning zone to expect flooding of a few homes and businesses, spray and flooding on roads, delays in bus and train services, and a chance of power supply interruptions. Following a spate of warm weather, forecasters have advised Britons to expect a "very different" feel to last week as downpours spread and temperatures drop. Met Office spokesman Craig Snell described this week’s weather as a "mixed bag," stating, "It is going to be a more changeable week compared to what we have been used to for the last two to three weeks. It’s not going to be a complete washout – we will see some further sunnier moments, but most of the UK will see some rain at some point."

For Wednesday, April 16, 2025, the weather forecast varies by region. In London and the South East, it will be mostly fine and dry with some sunny spells developing in the afternoon, with a maximum temperature of 16C. In the South West, cloud and rain will clear in the morning before a dry and bright afternoon, with scattered showers and a maximum temperature of 15C.

In the Midlands, cloud and rain will ease in the East Midlands before a dry and bright afternoon, with some gusty winds and a maximum temperature of 13C. Heavy rain in the morning in the West Midlands will clear by the afternoon, with a maximum temperature of 15C. The North East will see cloudy skies with heavy spells of rain and gusty winds, with a maximum temperature of 11C. The North West is expected to have an unsettled day with spells of heavy rain and wind, also reaching a maximum temperature of 11C.

Scotland will experience cool, cloudy, and rainy weather with some heavier downpours, breezy conditions, and a maximum temperature of 10C. Northern Ireland will be cool and cloudy with persistent heavy rain, a risk of coastal gales, and a maximum temperature of 8C. Wales will see cloudy weather with some heavy rain moving northwards, but it should be dry and bright in the afternoon with some sunny spells and a maximum temperature of 13C.

Looking ahead to the Easter weekend, the weather is expected to be a mixed picture across the UK from Thursday, April 17, 2025, to Friday, April 18, 2025, with a combination of scattered showers and sunny spells. The Met Office forecasts that many people should see dry and bright conditions with a few showers on Thursday, with spells of rain between brighter interludes into the Easter weekend. Although most of the country will experience rain on Friday and Saturday, more settled conditions are expected in London, the southeast, and East Midlands. Wales, the West Midlands, and the southwest are likely to experience more changeable weather and heavier downpours.

Unsettled conditions are expected to continue throughout the weekend, with a risk of hail and thunder from Sunday, April 20, 2025, before a spell of more dry and sunny weather next week. Britons can expect showers or longer spells of rain, which will be heavy at times, with a risk of hail and thunder, perhaps accompanied by strong winds. Temperatures will likely be near normal overall. Into the following week, a similar pattern is likely at first, with unsettled conditions at times and a risk of some heavy rain or showers.

In summary, the Easter weekend forecast indicates a stark contrast to the wall-to-wall sunshine experienced just a week prior. As Deputy Chief Meteorologist Steven Skeates noted, "The Easter weekend is set to bring changeable weather for many. Some areas may experience near-dry conditions all weekend, whilst others may see heavy rain." With many travelers expected to hit the roads for holiday getaways, the RAC has urged drivers to plan ahead and be prepared for potential delays due to wet weather and expected congestion.
