The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially announced the results for the UGC NET December 2024 exam on February 22, 2025, generating considerable excitement among candidates who appeared for the test. Administered for 85 subjects, this year’s exam saw approximately 8.49 lakh candidates registering, with 649,490 participating across 558 centers located throughout 266 cities across India.
Conducted between January 3 and January 27, 2025, the UGC NET exam is pivotal for candidates aspiring to qualify for role as Assistant Professors or to receive Junior Research Fellowships (JRF). The announcement of results allows successful candidates to take significant steps toward their academic and professional careers. "Candidates can check their scorecard and cutoff marks by visiting the official website of NTA," noted the agency.
This year, the qualification threshold posed significant challenges, with results indicating only 25.8% of participants qualifying. Overall, 167,764 candidates succeeded, leading to intense competition for limited academic positions. The distribution of candidates across genders was also recorded, as 477,397 (56.22%) of those who attempted the exam were female, whereas 371,718 (43.77%) were male, alongside 51 (0.01%) from third gender categories.
Focusing on specific cutoff marks, this year, the UGC NET Cut off for Economics was positioned at 206 for JRF and 180 for Assistant Professorship. Similarly, Political Science demonstrated heightened requirements with cutoffs of 234 marks for JRF and 210 for professors. The factors influencing these cutoff scores uniquely include the difficulty level of the exam, the number of candidates participating, and performance trends over the years.
For candidates eager to verify their results, the process is relatively straightforward. “Visit the official UGC NET site, click on the December 2024 result link, and input the required details, including your application number and date of birth,” guidance provided by NTA indicated. Candidates are encouraged to download their scorecards for verification and future reference.
Importantly, the scorecards not only confirm whether candidates have passed or failed; they detail marks obtained on both Paper I and Paper II of the exam, as well as the overall qualifying status. With no negative marking system implemented, candidates were able to attempt all questions without the risk of losing marks for incorrect answers.
Understanding the significance of these results is imperative. The UGC NET exam serves as the gateway to becoming eligible for roles as Assistant Professors at various universities and higher education institutions, with scores remaining valid for future academic opportunities, including Ph.D. admissions. Candidates who secure JRF positions may avail of fellowships with specific institutions.
Consolidated data revealed must be heeded; the qualification statuses included 5,158 candidates successful for JRF and Assistant Professor roles combined, with 48,161 qualifying for Assistant Professor and Ph.D. admissions, and 114,445 qualifying solely for Ph.D. programs. This year’s results echo the competitive nature of higher education and research positions across India.
Lastly, any candidates who did not achieve qualifying marks are presented with hope for future attempts, as another UGC NET session is scheduled for June. Candidates must continue to monitor the NTA website for updates on the application process, examination guidelines, and rules for maintaining eligibility.
