UConn Stars Shine As Bueckers Leads Trio In WNBA Draft

Paige Bueckers advocates for teammates as Chen and Griffin join the league

NEW YORK, N.Y. — The 2025 WNBA Draft on April 14 marked a significant milestone for UConn women's basketball, as three of its players were selected, showcasing the program's enduring excellence. Leading the charge was Paige Bueckers, who was drafted first overall by the Dallas Wings. Following her were teammates Kaitlyn Chen and Aubrey Griffin, who were both picked in the third round, with Chen going to the Golden State Valkyries at No. 30 and Griffin being selected by the Minnesota Lynx at No. 37.

This year's draft was particularly special not just for the players but also for the UConn community, as it highlighted the program's depth and talent. Bueckers, who has been a standout since her freshman year, took the opportunity during her post-selection interview to advocate passionately for her teammates. "I think two teams or one team would be genius to add Kaitlyn Chen and Aubrey Griffin to their teams, so I think they should get drafted tonight. But just I just love them so much and they're going to be my sisters for life," she said, visibly emotional about her teammates' journeys.

Griffin's selection is particularly noteworthy as she became the 50th WNBA draftee in UConn history. Despite facing significant challenges during her collegiate career, including multiple injuries, Griffin's determination and talent shone through. "It’s honestly just surreal," Griffin expressed after hearing her name called. "I’m super proud of Kaitlyn and super excited to be here, and I’m just blessed. I honestly didn’t think I would get picked, so I’m just super grateful that I can be able to continue playing the game that I love."

Griffin's path to the WNBA was fraught with obstacles. She missed the entire 2021-22 season due to lower leg and ankle issues, followed by back surgery to repair a disk issue. In January 2024, she suffered an ACL tear, which further delayed her return to the court. Despite these setbacks, she managed to play 16 games in her final season, averaging 11.3 minutes per game. At her best, Griffin averaged 11.3 points and 6.6 rebounds during the 2022-23 season, demonstrating her potential as a valuable asset in the league.

On the other hand, Kaitlyn Chen, who transferred to UConn from Princeton, also made her mark during her brief time with the Huskies. She started all 40 of UConn's games this season, contributing an average of 6.9 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 3.37 assists per game. Chen's experience and leadership were pivotal in guiding the team to its 12th national title. "Honestly, I’m still in a little bit of shock, it's all a little overwhelming," Chen said after being drafted. "I was really just here to watch Paige get drafted, and I'm so happy for her, but it's been an unreal night."

Chen's journey to the draft was unique; she began her collegiate career at Princeton before making the move to UConn for her final year of eligibility, a decision that proved fruitful as she helped lead the Huskies to a championship. "I was lucky enough to have such a great time at Princeton and be so successful there, and I was lucky enough to be given the opportunity to come to UConn," she reflected. "It’s been a pretty great ride so far."

Both players were not formally invited to the draft but attended to support Bueckers, and their selections came just minutes apart, creating a memorable moment for the trio. UConn head coach Geno Auriemma has consistently praised the resilience and skill of his players, and this draft was a testament to the program's ability to develop talent capable of succeeding at the professional level.

The Minnesota Lynx, who selected Griffin, are coming off a strong season where they finished as runners-up to the New York Liberty in the WNBA Finals. The team retained key players from last season, including former UConn star Napheesa Collier, and is looking to build on that success. Griffin, with her versatility and potential, will be an exciting addition to the Lynx roster.

Meanwhile, the Golden State Valkyries, who drafted Chen, are set to make their debut in the WNBA this summer. This draft marks a significant step for the franchise as they aim to establish themselves in the league. Chen will join a team that is looking to make an impact from the get-go, and her experience at UConn will undoubtedly serve her well as she transitions to the professional level.

As the WNBA prepares for another exciting season, the selections of Bueckers, Chen, and Griffin highlight the ongoing legacy of UConn women's basketball. The program has now produced multiple draftees in 17 of the 29 drafts, a testament to its consistent success and the caliber of players it cultivates. With Bueckers leading the way and her teammates following closely behind, the future looks bright for these former Huskies as they embark on their professional careers.

In summary, the 2025 WNBA Draft was a night to remember for UConn women's basketball, showcasing the talent and determination of its players. As Bueckers, Chen, and Griffin step into the next chapter of their careers, fans and supporters alike eagerly await their contributions to the league.
