UC San Diego Claims First Big West Championship

The Tritons make history with their first NCAA Tournament appearance after defeating UC Davis.

HENDERSON, Nev. – UC San Diego's women's basketball team made history on Saturday, March 15, 2025, capturing the Big West Championship with a 75-66 victory over UC Davis at Lee's Family Forum. This significant win not only secures their first conference title but also marks their inaugural appearance at March Madness as they play at the Division I level.

Leading the charge for the Tritons was redshirt sophomore Gracie Gallegos, who delivered a stellar performance, scoring a career-high 24 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Gallegos's efforts were instrumental from the game's onset, as she quickly opened the scoring with a three-point play, helping UC San Diego establish a commanding 8-0 lead before the Aggies could even respond. By the first quarter's end, the Tritons had built a solid 16-9 advantage.

"We were just focused on playing our game and sticking to our defense, which has been our strength all tournament," stated Gallegos after the victory.

The Tritons continued to dominate play through the first half, limiting UC Davis to just 23% shooting (7-for-31) and leading 34-21 at halftime. Their defensive strategy stifled the Aggies, especially during tough stretches when they missed their first eight field goal attempts.

Adding to the Tritons' strong performance was sophomore Sumayah Sugapong, who contributed 11 points and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Sugapong's ability to perform under pressure was highlighted by her significant contributions throughout the three-game tournament. After the victory over top-seeded Hawaii, where she scored the game-winning layup, fans considered her as one of the key components of the team.

"Winning MVP feels amazing, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates. This is all about us together," Sugapong expressed after the game, her excitement palpable.

For the Tritons (20-15), the victory means they will move on to the NCAA Tournament starting next week, making it all the more special as it marks their first chance to compete on such a prestigious level after transitioning from Division II. UC San Diego had to endure five seasons of transition after officially joining Division I and the Big West Conference back in 2020.

Head coach Heidi Vanderveer remarked on the team's preparedness for the next step. "I think our experience from this tournament will help us no matter who we face next week. We’ve played tough games, and the girls have shown incredible resilience and skill. They’re ready for March Madness!"

On the other side, the UC Davis Aggies concluded the tournament with a record of 21-12, their hopes dashed by the Tritons' tenacious defense and effective scoring. Despite their defeat, their performance throughout the season was commendable, and they fought hard to maintain their lead during early matchups.

The complete tournament is one for the history books, as UC San Diego’s women’s team celebrates their initial Big West Championship victory. Fans and supporters rallied at the LionTree Arena, watching the NCAA Tournament selection show together on the night following the championship game. Admission was free, and the energy was electric as everyone anticipated the Tritons' first opponent.

"We couldn’t have asked for anything more from our players. They’ve worked so hard for this, and we’re all excited for what’s to come. We’re going dancing!" Vanderveer added triumphantly as the evening unfolded.

Earlier, the Tritons defeated Cal Poly 59-54 to advance to the championship game. Their performance was impressive not only for their tenacity but also as they rallied from behind, showcasing their development and determination throughout the season.

With this historical win, UC San Diego joins the ranks of only two other Big West schools, Hawai’i and UC Santa Barbara, who have previously achieved both men’s and women’s basketball championship titles within the 21st century.

The Tritons will enter March Madness as underdogs, ready to make their mark and demonstrate the resilience and teamwork they have cultivated throughout their challenging transition period. The NCAA March Madness selection show was set to air on Sunday, March 16, 2025, at 5 p.m. PDT, and fans across the country will be rooting for this newfound powerhouse as they step onto the national stage.
