Uber Acquires Full Control Of South Korea's UT Ride-Hailing Service

The San Francisco-based giant aims to strengthen its presence and service quality amid fierce competition.

Uber Technologies, Inc. is set to strengthen its foothold in South Korea by wholly acquiring TMAP Mobility’s 49 percent stake in UT, the ride-hailing joint venture originally formed between the companies. Following approval from TMAP Mobility's shareholders, which is expected early next year, Uber's stake will increase to 100 percent, enhancing its operational control over the service.

Founded with the intent to tap the growing market for ride-hailing services, the UT joint venture was established back in 2021, with Uber initially claiming a 51 percent share. Despite its promising beginnings, UT encountered stiff competition from local rival Kakao T and struggled to gain significant traction. Reports from Uber indicated sluggish growth during its initial operational years.

Uber's General Manager for Asia Pacific Mobility, Dom Taylor, emphasized the company's focus on providing "reliable rides" and creating more opportunities for drivers throughout the country. He underscored the acquisition's role as part of Uber’s broader commitment to expand its investment and engagement within the South Korean market.

To amplify its brand presence, UT underwent rebranding to Uber Taxi in March 2024. This strategy aims to integrate the service with Uber’s global branding, which Taylor noted was also meant to attract international travelers visiting South Korea. This move appears to be showing positive results, as Uber reported an impressive 80 percent increase in user counts within the first half of 2024 compared to the same period the previous year.

Despite the acquisition, Uber has committed to continuing its collaboration with TMAP Mobility and its parent company, SK Square. This partnership will maintain the usage of TMAP’s mapping services, which are integral to enhancing Uber's service quality.

Since its entry to the South Korean market back in 2013 with the launch of its Uber X ride-sharing service, Uber has faced various challenges, including legal controversies alleging violations of the Passenger Transport Service Act. These challenges led to the discontinuation of the Uber X service in 2015, though Uber transitioned to operating its Uber Black premium taxi service with licensed drivers. The establishment of UT marked Uber's strategic pivot back to the South Korean market, with aspirations to regain competitiveness.

With the acquisition of TMAP Mobility’s stake, Uber aims not only to consolidate its operational capabilities but also to refine its technology infrastructure and bolster safety standards. The company plans to focus on enhancing user experience for both riders and drivers, anticipating the impact of these changes on overall service quality.

This acquisition taps directly on Uber’s commitment to adapt and evolve amid the competitive pressures defined by local market dynamics. With the shifting focus toward technology-driven solutions, Uber envisions positioning itself more effectively within the burgeoning mobility sector across the region.

Looking forward, industry experts suggest this acquisition could serve as a pivotal moment for the future of ride-hailing services in South Korea, enabling Uber to leverage its global expertise and innovations locally. If successful, it could rejuvenate UT's brand and operational strategy, fostering greater expansion opportunities not only within South Korea but also potentially setting benchmarks for Uber’s other international ventures.
