The United Arab Emirates is witnessing a continuous evolution in its monetary system, announcing the release of a new 100 dirham banknote infused with advanced designs and security features. This initiative aims to bolster trust in the nation’s currency while keeping pace with the latest innovations in banknote printing technology, which enhances protection against counterfeiting and ensures the stability of the financial system.
The UAE Central Bank officially unveiled the new 100 dirham banknote, made from polymer material and embedded with sophisticated security designs that reflect the country’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. This issuance aligns with the third series of the national currency and is crafted to tell the story of the UAE’s remarkable success through symbols of culture and development.
The design emphasizes the UAE's status as a global economic hub and a primary trade gateway connecting continents. Khaled Mohamed Balama, Governor of the UAE Central Bank, underscored the significance of this new issuance, saying, "This new banknote embodies the Central Bank’s commitment to the vision of leadership in enhancing a sustainable future through initiatives that support climate neutrality and bolster the country’s financial competitiveness."
The front of the banknote features the iconic fort of Umm Al-Quwain, a historical and cultural landmark that symbolizes the blend of the rich past and the modern present. Conversely, the reverse side showcases the Port of Fujairah, one of the largest maritime ports in the UAE and a key hub for shipping and transport. Adding symbolism, an image of the Union Train appears on the reverse side, signifying the railway network linking the Emirates and enhancing social connections while supporting sustainable economic development through comprehensive logistical infrastructure.
The newly released banknote is distinguished by advanced security features aimed at enhancing trust and combatting counterfeiting. These include the SPARK Flow® DIMENSIONS technology, and the KINEGRAM COLORS® security strips. Additionally, the design integrates Braille symbols to assist those who are visually impaired in recognizing and discerning the denomination by touch.
According to the Central Bank's report, polymer banknotes are designed to be twice as durable and sustainable as traditional paper notes, further contributing to environmental protection measures. The new banknote will circulate alongside the current 100 dirham note starting March 24, 2025.
Furthermore, all banks and exchange companies are required to program their cash deposit machines and counting devices to ensure acceptance of the new banknotes as they hold guaranteed value per the law. This innovative step comes as the UAE Central Bank also celebrates receiving accolades for its banknote designs. It was awarded the best banknote issuance in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa in 2023 and 2025 for the 500 dirham and 1,000 dirham notes during the high-security printing conference for the region, reflecting regional recognition of its innovative designs and technical features.
The initiative underlines not only the UAE's ambitions in the field of monetary innovation but also its broader commitment to sustainable practices in banking. The new banknote design encapsulates national achievements and aspirations for a brighter future while preserving the cultural identity of the UAE.
In conjunction with the announcement, Balama emphasized the timing of the launch, stating, "We are proud to introduce this outstanding issuance coinciding with the celebrations of Eid Al-Fitr." This sentiment encapsulates the significance of the occasion as both a financial milestone and a cultural celebration.
