UAE Residents Gear Up For Eid Al-Fitr Getaways And Long Weekend

Families plan travel and celebrations as holiday dates await moon sighting confirmation.

Residents of the UAE are eagerly anticipating the arrival of Eid al-Fitr, which is just around the corner. The festive celebration marks the end of Ramadan and is expected to offer either four or five days off, depending on the moon sighting. Travel agencies are already witnessing significant interest as families plan their getaways to celebrate the holiday, which falls at the end of March or the beginning of April.

According to reports from Khaleej Times, trend analyses from travel agencies reveal a notable shift among UAE residents toward family-oriented and experience-based trips for this Eid. Approximately 60% of travelers are opting for outbound journeys, exploring cultural, adventure, and nature-based experiences. Meanwhile, 40% to 50% are choosing to stay within the UAE to welcome family and friends.

Eid al-Fitr celebrations are expected to commence on Sunday, March 30, if the crescent moon of Shawwal is sighted on the evening of Saturday, March 29. This would result in the holiday spanning from the weekend through Tuesday, April 1, marking the first long break of the year. On the other hand, if the moon is not spotted, Ramadan will extend to its full duration of 30 days, pushing the holiday start to Monday, March 31, and resulting in even more days off for workers until Wednesday, April 2.

The moon sighting committee's confirmation will be announced after they gather on the evening of March 29. Astronomical calculations by experts from Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics indicate the new crescent moon will be born at 1 p.m. Cairo time on Saturday, and visibility post-sunset points toward Eid likely commencing on Sunday.

This year, popular destinations for Eid travels include Georgia, Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Armenia—each offering visa on arrival or e-visa options, making them particularly appealing. Families are excited to explore these regions, which embody affordable luxury and easy travel access.

Interestingly, airfare prices for popular routes have already risen by 15% to 20%, and hotel rates are experiencing surges of 20% to 30% as the peak travel period approaches. Given these trends, travelers are encouraged to book accommodations and flights as soon as possible, especially for destinations requiring visas, like Japan or certain European countries.

For residents planning to partake in moon sighting traditions, the Dubai Astronomy Group has called on the community to engage in this celestial endeavor, advising observers to look toward the western horizon after sunset on March 29 for the crescent moon's appearance. They suggest using telescopes or binoculars for enhanced visibility and encourage residents to report sightings to local authorities.

This year’s anticipated five-day break will not only allow UAE residents time off work but also provide ample opportunities for family gatherings, travel, relaxation, and celebration. The official announcement confirming the final dates will hold everyone's attention on March 29, marking the start of festivities.

With governments and local celebrations alike preparing, residents should brace for the joyous days to come. Eid al-Fitr is not just about time off work; it is about family reunions, community celebrations, festive meals, and exchanging of gifts. The holiday, referred to as the “Festival of Breaking the Fast,” serves as the culmination of Ramadan’s month of fasting, prayer, and charity.

Given the excitement building around this year’s celebrations, the holiday period promises to make lasting memories for families and communities across the UAE. Whether folks decide to celebrate at home or venture abroad, the spirit of Eid al-Fitr will undoubtedly leave people feeling connected and joyful.

So as the date approaches, residents of the UAE are encouraged to keep their spirits high, embracing the opportunities for travel or quality family time. Happy Eid to all as we prepare to celebrate this cherished occasion!
