UAE And Italy Expand Cultural Ties Through Strategic Collaborations

Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed's visit emphasizes growing partnerships across culture, education, and technology.

The cultural and scientific collaboration between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Italy is witnessing significant growth, especially following the recent state visit by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Italy. The visit, which took place on Sunday, December 3, 2023, underscored the deepening ties and mutual interests between these two nations.

Upon his arrival in Italy, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed was warmly welcomed by Italian President Sergio Mattarella in Rome. During the lavish dinner hosted by Mattarella, discussions emphasized the historic relations and future endeavors aimed at enhancing cooperation for the benefit of both nations. "Our visit to Italy expresses our desire to work together to achieve significant progress for our distinguished strategic partnership..." stated Sheikh Mohamed, highlighting the importance of the relationship.

The agenda included discussions on several key areas, including economy, investment, renewable energy, and advanced technology, but it also placed special emphasis on cultural collaboration. Italy and the UAE are determined to move forward together, guided by common goals for growth and cultural exchange.

One of the highlights of the UAE-Italy cultural initiatives is the establishment of the Arab Cultural Institute at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart located in Milan, which opened just this past August. This is the first of its kind globally and aims to bridge Arab and Western cultures, targeting the new generation of Italian youth interested in learning Arabic and exploring Arab culture. The institute also seeks to facilitate partnerships between Arab and Italian publishers.

Further enhancing the cultural ties, the UAE contributed to the restoration of the Giannino Stoppani Library, which was severely damaged by fire in May 2022. The library, significant for its collection of children's literature, was reopened thanks to the donation of 50,000 euros by the Sharjah Capital of the World Book Office, marking another step forward in UAE's cultural contributions to Italy.

Education remains at the forefront of the partnership, as seen with the recent opening of the Italian International School in Abu Dhabi. This marks the first Italian school to establish roots in the UAE, symbolizing cultural integration and respect for different educational modalities. UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Sheikh Nahiyaan Mubarak Al Nahiyaan, emphasized the community's commitment to inclusivity, stating, "The Emirati society is open to everyone and allows various cultures to enrich the educational experience."

Beyond educational initiatives, the UAE's cultural presence has been increasingly felt through various exhibitions and international events, such as the participation of the UAE at the Venice Biennale. The UAE Minister of Culture, Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qasimi, noted, "Being present at major international exhibitions is important for showcasing the artistic talents of the UAE on the global stage." Their participation reinforces the aim of presenting UAE art and culture to broader audiences.

Academically, cooperation has been emphasized through the organization of the Italian-Emirati Scientific Day held at Salerno University. The event served to solidify academic relationships, discussing how universities from both countries can work together to address global challenges, particularly those related to health and biotechnology.

The historical backdrop of this partnership dates back to 1971, with both countries acknowledging the remarkable growth over the decades due to reciprocal visits by high-level officials. For example, UAE Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan's visit to Matera, the European Capital of Culture, was pivotal as it brought attention to the strong cultural threads linking the two regions.

There’s no doubt—cultural collaboration between the UAE and Italy is blossoming, paving the way not just for artistic and educational exchanges, but also for innovative partnerships across various domains. The initiatives reinforce shared values of tolerance, coexistence, and peaceful engagement, establishing the two nations as cultural allies.

With enthusiasm for the future of this partnership, UAE officials are optimistic. They foresee these efforts significantly bolstering bilateral relations, enhancing mutual respect and cooperation through various cultural channels. These endeavors are not just enhancing ties between the governments but are also fostering genuine connections between the communities and individuals of both nations.

Future collaborations are likely to yield exciting opportunities, drawing from each nation’s rich cultural heritage and shared aspirations for global dialogue and peace. The UAE and Italy's joint commitment to cultivating friendship and cultural exchange may serve as an illuminating example for others, demonstrating how nations can unite through mutual respect and collaboration.
