Typhoon Man-yi Suspends Ferry Services And Causes Flooding

Southern China faces severe weather disruptions as Typhoon Man-yi brings high winds and waterlogging to the region

Typhoon Man-yi has made headlines as it significantly impacted southern China, particularly the coastal regions of Guangdong province, leading to suspensions of ferry services and widespread flooding. This powerful storm has brought tidal waves, high winds, and severe waterlogging, forcing local authorities to take precautionary measures for public safety.

According to reports, ferry services across the Qiongzhou Strait and other routes were halted as the storm approached. This decision was made by Guangdong’s marine safety administration to protect residents and travelers from the potential dangers posed by the adverse weather. The storm’s strength was evident as cities like Shenzhen and Shanwei experienced severe flooding of streets due to seawater intrusion.

The Hong Kong Observatory reported on November 20, 2024, stating Typhoon Man-yi had transitioned to a lower-intensity storm and was now classified as a low-pressure area. Earlier, it left its mark on the Philippines, where it resulted in seven fatalities and exacerbated the already dire situation caused by previous storms. The storm's maximum sustained winds were recorded at approximately 40 kilometers per hour (about 25 miles per hour), considerably milder than at its peak.

Eyewitness accounts described how on Monday evening, parts of Shenzhen saw some streets submerged under seawater, with the flooding lasting only one to two hours, leading to little structural damage. Similarly, Shanwei faced temporary waterlogging without any reports of injuries. Authorities have warned residents to expect more seawater incursions as the storm continues to affect the region, urging them to stay indoors and limit outdoor activities.

While climatologists are predicting more frequent and severe storms due to climate change, improvements in preparedness and early-warning systems have helped lessen the worst effects. The Asia Pacific region, which includes countries like China and the Philippines, continues to experience challenges from increasingly intense weather events. Experts attribute rising sea temperatures caused by climate change to the increased moisture levels fueling typhoons, extending the typhoon season beyond its typical end time, which is usually around September.

This recent storm is part of broader trends affecting many areas globally. Europe, especially Spain, and regions of the southeastern United States have also seen their share of devastating storms in recent months. The reality of climate change is pushing forward discussions on weather readiness, local government flood management, and how best to protect vulnerable populations from these natural disasters.

For now, residents of Guangdong must navigate the aftermath of Typhoon Man-yi as they brace themselves for the continued effects of inclement weather. Local officials are prioritizing public safety and monitoring the storm's progress closely.

The conditions are prompting citizens to remain vigilant and adhere to local advisories. Whether through avoiding outdoor excursions or preparing for possible additional flooding, communities are coming together, seeking to mitigate risks and support one another as they recover from the storm's impact. Long-term, these events serve as reminders of the increasing unpredictability of weather patterns linked to climate change.
