Two Stowaways Found Dead Inside JetBlue Plane

Investigation underway to determine identities and circumstances surrounding their access to the aircraft

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Tragedy struck Monday night at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport when two individuals were discovered dead inside the landing gear compartment of a JetBlue aircraft after its flight from New York's JFK Airport. The bodies were found during routine post-flight inspections at approximately 11:10 PM, alarming officials and the public about airline security safeguards.

According to reports from the airline and local authorities, the grim discovery was made during standard maintenance checks following JetBlue Flight 1801's arrival from New York. The Broward County Sheriff’s Office soon reacted to the scene, with deputies confirming the two individuals had been pronounced dead at the location, around 11:30 PM. "Tragically, both individuals were deceased. At this time, the identities of the individuals and the circumstances surrounding how they accessed the aircraft remain under investigation," JetBlue stated.

The identities of the deceased have yet to be publicly released, and the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office has been charged with conducting autopsies to determine the exact cause of death. Investigations have commenced to exactly ascertain how the individuals managed to enter the landing gear compartment, as the airline has expressed commitment to cooperating closely with authorities. "This is a heartbreaking situation, and we are committed to working closely with authorities to support their efforts to understand how this occurred," the JetBlue statement read.

The aircraft, which took off from Kennedy Airport at 7:49 PM, landed safely, without any immediate disruption to airport operations. "There are no impacts to operations due to the incident," confirmed Arlene Satchell, spokesperson for the Broward County Aviation Department.

This tragic event raises serious questions about airline security measures. Accessing the landing gear compartments is notoriously perilous and has been used historically by individuals attempting to stow away on flights. This method has proven fatal on multiple occasions due to the extreme temperatures, lack of oxygen, and pressure changes faced within aircraft components. Tragically, landing gear compartments open and close upon takeoff and landing, creating additional hazards for anyone sheltering inside.

Such stowaway attempts have been documented over the years, with some fatalities and few survival stories. For example, as recently as Christmas Day, the body of another stowaway was found in the wheel well of a United Airlines aircraft, highlighting the recurrent dangers associated with this desperate act.

According to JetBlue, the investigation is still active, focusing on how the individuals accessed the aircraft. Meanwhile, incident after incident has drawn attention to the risks of undetected entry to commercial flights. Just last month, instances involving passengers boarding flights without tickets have heightened worries. A Russian national bypassed security to board a Delta flight, raising alarms about airport safety protocols.

For those who may still attempt similar stowaway tactics, the dangers vary from hypothermia to fatal crushing from retracting gear, as illustrated by numerous instances documented over the years. The investigation continues, and regular updates are expected as officials seek to clarify the situation.

The startling discovery has left many wondering how it could have happened, and more updates are anticipated as both the airline and local authorities work together to prevent such tragedies from occurring again. This incident serves to remind everyone about the severe dangers posed by stowaway attempts.
