Two Medical Students Killed In Indiara Car Accident

Tragic crash leaves three others hospitalized as community mourns young lives lost

On the morning of May 5, 2025, a tragic car accident on the BR-060 in Indiara, Goiás, claimed the lives of two medical students, Camilla de Paula Lopes Cavalcante, 19, and Anna Luyza Carvalho, 21. The accident occurred at kilometer 246 while the five young women were traveling in a white Hyundai HB20S towards Mineiros, where they were studying at the Centro Universitário de Mineiros (Unifimes).

According to the Federal Highway Police (PRF), the vehicle left the road and overturned, resulting in severe injuries to three other occupants. Camilla was pronounced dead at the scene, while Anna was rushed to the Municipal Hospital of Indiara but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

The three other passengers—Evelyn Caroline Alves Martins, Ana Vitória Gomes, and Isadora Nogueira Wesmone—sustained serious injuries, including fractures and facial trauma. They were initially taken to the Municipal Hospital of Indiara, with Isadora later transferred to the Hospital Estadual de Urgências de Goiás Dr. Valdemiro Cruz (Hugo) for further treatment.

The impact of the accident was so severe that three of the five young women were trapped in the wreckage, prompting a swift response from emergency services. The local fire department reported that they had to extricate the victims from the mangled vehicle.

In a heartfelt statement on social media, Unifimes expressed its condolences, stating, "At this moment of sorrow, we extend our deepest feelings to the families, friends, and colleagues. May they find comfort and strength to overcome this irreparable loss." The university community is mourning the loss of the two promising students, who were both in their second semester of medical studies.

A classmate, choosing to remain anonymous, shared her grief, recalling how inseparable the five friends were. "They always went to college together, left together, and hung out together. I never saw them apart since the first day of class," she said. The close-knit group often relied on each other for support, especially since many of them were away from their families.

As the community comes to terms with the tragedy, a prayer circle is scheduled for 4 PM on the same day, aimed at supporting the recovery of the injured and honoring the memories of Camilla and Anna.

Initial reports indicated that the students were from Anápolis; however, it was later clarified that only Anna was from that city. The circumstances leading to the accident are still under investigation. According to the local police, it appears that the driver lost control of the vehicle while approaching a curve, possibly due to excessive speed or inexperience. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The police have registered the incident, and a forensic investigation is underway to determine the exact causes of the accident. Authorities are expected to release a report in the coming days.

The loss of Camilla and Anna has left a profound impact on their classmates and the broader community. Their dedication to their studies and commitment to their future careers in medicine will not be forgotten. As friends and family gather to remember the lives lost, they reflect on the bright futures that were tragically cut short.

In the wake of this tragedy, the importance of road safety, especially among young drivers, is being highlighted. The accident serves as a somber reminder of the potential dangers on the roads and the need for vigilance, particularly when navigating unfamiliar routes or challenging driving conditions.

As the investigation continues, the community of Indiara and the students at Unifimes stand united in grief, honoring the memories of the two young women who had so much to offer the world.
