The news emerged on October 20, 2024, detailing the unfortunate circumstances surrounding his death, which occurred on September 3, 2024, due to multiple organ failure caused by sepsis, as reported by various sources.
According to the reports, Piko spent his last days at a hospital located within Kanagawa Prefecture. His passing was marked by great sadness, particularly since his funeral took place on September 8, with only four attendees. Osugi, who is also known as a film critic, was unable to attend the service as he has been grappling with dementia himself, making it impossible for him to participate.
During their later years, especially after Osugi began to show early signs of dementia around the summer of 2021, the brothers’ bond was both tested and strengthened, as they decided to live together. This decision was primarily made out of concern for both their conditions; as they navigated the challenges of aging and health struggles, they could provide support to one another.
Following the initial move-in, their relationship faced significant strains due to the difficulties of what is referred to as “elderly caregiving.” Over time, Piko found it increasingly difficult to manage Osugi's condition.
