Turkish Oriental Dancer Tanyeli Passes Away After Cancer Battle

The beloved performer lost her fight against pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a remarkable legacy and grieving fans.

Tragic news has struck the world of entertainment as Tanyeli, one of Turkey's most famous oriental dancers, passed away following her long battle with pancreatic cancer. She breathed her last on March 17, 2025, at the age of 54, at the hospital where she had been undergoing treatment for several months.

Tanyeli, born Öznur Kral on January 1, 1972, in Izmir, had faced significant health challenges over the past 2.5 years. Known for her vibrant performances and passionate dance style, she became widely recognized throughout the 1980s and went on to represent Turkey at various international festivals. Her husband, İlker Sünneli, shared the heartbreaking news via social media, announcing, "My dear wife Tanyeli Özruh Sünneli has lost her 2.5-year battle for life. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, after the noon prayer at Zincirlikuyu Cemetery, followed by burial at our family cemetery in Bodrum."

Recently, Tanyeli's condition had worsened, leading to her being intubated just days before her passing. She had shared optimistic updates about her health on her social media accounts, hoping to be discharged from the hospital. On February 27, 2025, she stated, "I am in the hospital and, God willing, I hope to be discharged soon.” Sadly, her hopes were not realized, and her health deteriorated significantly just prior to her death.

Throughout her career, Tanyeli won the hearts of many with her unique dance performances and charismatic stage presence. She first entered the world of dance as a young girl and quickly made her mark. By the 1980s, she was captivating audiences across Turkey and beyond, solidifying her reputation as one of the top oriental dancers of her time. Her contributions to the art were substantial, as she not only performed but also taught and inspired numerous upcoming dancers.

Tanyeli's artistic pursuits extended to music as well. She released several albums including "Dans Et Benimle" and "Turkish Belly Dances," bringing oriental dance to wider audiences. Her albums celebrated her passion for dance and left a lasting impact on the genre.

Born to parents who divorced when she was just two, Tanyeli faced hardships during her childhood, spending years at the Children's Protection Institution. At the young age of 14, she got married and welcomed her first child, Taylan, at only 15. After her first marriage ended, she relocated to Australia to seek new opportunities.

Despite the challenges she faced, including the personal loss of her mother to cancer in 2015 and the passing of her brother due to the same disease just months ago, Tanyeli persistently fought her battles with grace. Her resilience was evident as she navigated her health issues, initially diagnosed with stomach cancer and later with pancreatic cancer, which she bravely battled until her final days.

Even during her treatment, Tanyeli remained hopeful and shared her thoughts with her devoted fans. She fondly remembered her childhood and the struggles she had overcome, saying, "I believe I will defeat cancer with God’s help.” Unfortunately, her fight came to an end much too soon.

Friends and colleagues showed tremendous support for Tanyeli throughout her illness. Notable figures, including singers Yıldız Tilbe, Hakan Altun, and Zara, organized concerts to raise awareness and funds for her medical expenses, reflecting how deeply she was loved and respected within the artistic community.

The entertainment industry is mourning the loss of one of its brightest stars, whose legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of dancers. Tanyeli's contributions extended beyond mere performances; she played a pivotal role in the recognition and appreciation of oriental dance as both a cultural art form and profession.

Her passing marks the end of an era for oriental dance in Turkey, but her spirit will continue to resonate with those who cherished her art and her story. Fans and admirers will forever hold Tanyeli dear in their hearts, remembering her not just for her dance, but for her courage, passion, and the indelible mark she left on the world.
