TSMC Set To Accept Orders For Groundbreaking 2nm Chips Soon

Demand skyrockets as tech giants line up for 2nm chips projected to revolutionize device performance.

TSMC, the leading semiconductor foundry, is poised to begin accepting orders for its new 2nm chips on April 1, 2025. This marks a critical advancement in the technology sector, as the production of these cutting-edge components is expected to commence shortly thereafter, with the initial products projected to hit the market in 2026.

According to China Times, TSMC has made significant progress in the yield rate of its 2nm production process, with analysts estimating it has already surpassed 60% capacity. The company’s specific facilities dedicated to 2nm production are located in Kaohsiung and Baoshan. A ceremony is scheduled for March 31, 2025, at the Kaohsiung site to celebrate the expansion of its manufacturing capacity.

The first official batch of 2nm chips is anticipated to be completed in Baoshan toward the end of April 2025. Notably, the demand for TSMC's new lithography technology has been exceptionally high, resulting in a virtual “queue” of clients eager to place orders.

Apple, historically one of TSMC’s largest customers, is expected to be among the first to order these 2nm chips for its upcoming A20 processor. Analysts project the Apple A20 will debut in the much-anticipated iPhone 18, scheduled for release in the second half of 2026.

Besides Apple, several other tech giants, including Intel, AMD, Broadcom, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), have shown significant interest in securing orders for TSMC's new technology.

A TSMC official stated that their goal is to reach an output of 50,000 wafers for 2nm chips per month by the end of 2025. With installations in both Baoshan and Kaohsiung capable of delivering a combined total of 80,000 wafers, there is optimism regarding meeting this ambitious production target.

TSMC's development of 2nm chips represents not just a leap in manufacturing technology but also a crucial step in addressing the growing demands of the semiconductor market. As global demand for high-performance chips continues to swell, TSMC's advancements could play a significant role in shaping the tech landscape over the next few years.
