Trump Prepares For Transformative Changes On Day One

Immigration, foreign policy, and domestic reforms at the forefront of Trump's inaugural plans

Donald Trump’s presidency promises to be characterized by significant shifts in policy from day one. His campaign rhetoric has outlined ambitious plans, which his transition team asserts will commence immediately when he takes office on January 20, 2025. Early indicators suggest Trump is poised to enact changes across various sectors, including immigration, foreign policy, and domestic energy initiatives.

Trump’s spokesperson, Karoline Leavitt, emphasized the president-elect's commitment to utilizing executive power effectively. "The American people can bank on President Trump using his executive power on day one to deliver on the promises he made to them on the campaign trail," she stated, underscoring his intention to take instantaneous action upon entering the Oval Office.

One of Trump’s most controversial pledges centers around immigration reform, particularly mass deportations. Trump has vowed to initiate the largest operation targeting illegal immigrant offenders right from his first day. According to Leavitt, "On day one, President Trump will marshal every lever of power to secure the border, protect their communities, and launch the largest mass deportation operation of illegal immigrant criminals in history." This plan's potential implementation involves significant coordination with military resources, raising alarms across various advocacy groups and citing concerns about civil liberties.

Despite the plan drawing skepticism and concern from civil rights organizations, Trump appears unequivocal. Polls, such as those from Data for Progress, reveal limited support for mass deportations among the American public, particularly for those who arrived as children or have established lives and businesses within the U.S. Nevertheless, Trump seems determined to move forward, highlighting his commitment to enforcing stricter immigration policies, including the controversial "Remain in Mexico" policy. This aspect may face delays as it requires negotiations with the Mexican government, complicative process.

Turning to international affairs, Trump has also expressed intent to address the situation surrounding Israeli hostages held by Hamas. He made it clear through social media channels, promising to act decisively if these hostages are not released before inauguration day. "Please let this TRUTH serve to represent if the hostages are not released prior to January 20, 2025, there will be ALL HELL TO PAY in the Middle East," he warned.

On the domestic front, Trump’s allies are gearing up to restart construction of the border wall, with Senator Tommy Tuberville indicating the groundwork is already laid. His commitment to enhancing border security is echoed by statements from different officials expressing the urgency of reinstancing the wall and restoring strict immigration policies. "My top priority is working with President Trump on Day One to build the wall, reinstate Remain in Mexico, and deport those who never should have been admitted," Tuberville noted.

Beyond immigration policies, Trump's agenda on Day 1 includes plans to reverse many regulatory measures instituted by the previous administration, particularly concerning energy and environmental policies. He has stated his intention to expand oil drilling and restore the Keystone XL pipeline, which has been stalled since 2022. Trump claims, "I want to close the border, and I want to drill, drill, drill," indicating his administration’s approach to positioning energy independence at the forefront of economic policies.

Several additional policy intentions reflect Trump's America First philosophy, including new tariffs on Chinese goods, changes to policies on transgender protections, and attempts to resolve the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine. Each of these measures is set to significantly reshape various aspects of American life and governance.

On the legal front, Trump remains entrenched in multiple criminal inquiries, and one of his personal promises includes pardoning individuals jailed for their roles during the January 6 Capitol riots. At campaign events, he labeled these participants as "unbelievable patriots," vowing to prioritize their pardons aimed at deflcting the accountability borne by the events of the insurrection. Significantly, he has also pledged to fire special counsel Jack Smith, indicating he won’t tolerate the currently impending investigations associated with his actions as president.

Transitioning to other domains of governance, the tumultuous path to Senate confirmations for Trump's cabinet selections is also drawing headline attention. For example, Pete Hegseth's nomination for Defense Secretary has faced scrutiny due to allegations involving his past conduct. A few Republican senators have started to show qualms about backing Hegseth, emphasizing the importance of confirming only candidates who can uphold the dignity of military service and ensuring their integrity aligns with conservative values.

The divisive nature of Trump’s proposed policies has ignited discussions across the political spectrum, particularly surrounding the forthcoming cabinet appointments and their potential long-term ramifications. With some Republican senators raising flags over appointees, it remains to be seen how these early choices will influence public and party sentiment.

Complicative to the Trump inauguration are external events rapidly shaping the auspicious atmosphere for his first day. For one, Mexico has been dealing with waves of migration swelling across its borders as groups attempt to reach the United States, spurred partly by expectations of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal entry. Recently, thousands of migrants have been crossing the Suchiate River daily, contributing to the largest migrant caravan seen since the past year.

Reports indicate these movements toward the border are leading to strains on the Mexican government, which recently conveyed to Trump during calls how it would reinforce measures to manage immigration efficiently. President Claudia Sheinbaum assured Trump of her administration's commitment to addressing migration issues, indicating these rulers would “not let caravans reach the northern border,” yet struggles persist. Many potential migrants express frustrations over the existing asylum process, which has now become complicated under both the Biden and Trump administrations.

This reality adds more pressure on Sheinbaum's government to provide both security and compliance with U.S. demands, transforming the dynamics of immigration policy within the region. Critics argue this approach can turn Mexico effectively closer to becoming a vast detention camp, highlighting the sensitive nature of bilateral relations as the Trump administration resumes its hardline stance.

Through this multifaceted lens of immigration, foreign policy, and domestic reform, the approaching inauguration of Donald Trump signifies not just another transition of power but potentially the dawn of comprehensive and sweeping reforms across many facets of American and North American life. The policies set to be enacted point to significant ideological entrenchments on both sides of the political sphere, raising pressing questions on the wider socio-political fabric as the nation braces for what lies ahead.

With each day drawing nearer to the swearing-in ceremony, public and political reaction continues to swell, establishing the stage for what will undoubtedly be one of the most consequential presidencies of modern American history.
