Trump Administration Set To Roll Back Climate Regulations

Trump's new vision threatens expansive environmental protections established under previous administrations.

The Trump administration is set to launch a decisive attack on federal regulations, particularly those protecting public health and the environment, with climate change rules at the forefront of its targets. This legislative pivot, akin to Trump’s past efforts, will shift reliance to state, city, and private sector initiatives to combat climate change.

Historically, the administration’s approach contrasts starkly with its predecessors, especially the Biden administration, which championed extensive climate policies. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre defended the current administration by asserting, "If you look at this president, look at the action he's taken, he's taken more action on climate change than any other president." Despite this claim, numerous climate advocates remain skeptical, attributing significant climate action achievements to Biden, albeit within the parameters of bipartisan negotiation.

Donald Trump's strategy since his initial campaign has emphasized deregulation, including the dismantling of over 100 environmental regulations during his term from 2017 to 2021. Analysts fear these moves could undermine years of progress toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions and make sustained climate action more difficult. An independent research organization, the Rhodium Group, reported last July, indicating the U.S. could reduce its greenhouse gases by 38% to 56% below 2005 levels by 2035, under current policies. This promised reduction echoes President Biden's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century, yet Trump’s return to power threatens to derail this progress.

Notably, experts posit the U.S. needs regulations to effectively address climate change. With the potential to repeal sweeping policies like the Inflation Reduction Act, Trump’s administration seems poised to reinforce the oil and gas sectors. The free market proponents enthusiastic about these deregulation agendas often ignore the broader ecological ramifications of unregulated fossil fuel industries.

Chris Barnard, president of American Conservation Coalition Action, asserted the necessity of maintaining oil and gas production alongside efforts for clean energy. He described the right’s position; "I think something sets apart the right from the left when itcomes to these issues is... we still need oil and gas. You can't sacrifice economic growth for the sake of reducing emissions because plunging peopleinto poverty is not something I am willing to make." This viewpoint encapsulates sentiments among conservative circles favoring fossil fuel production.

Reacting to Trump’s potential policies, Democratic Senator Ed Markey shared, "Going forward, Donald Trump is personally going to have an activating influence on the environmental movementin the United States." This presumably emphasizes how Trump’s re-emergence on the political scene may galvanize environmental activism after observers noted dwindling enthusiasm for Biden's climate initiatives, mainly due to the administration's compromises between renewable and nonrenewable energy sources.

Climate organizations such as the Sunrise Movement and Gen Z for Change have not hesitated to voice opposition, with Elise Joshi, Executive Director of Gen Z for Change, publicly confronting administration officials about energy policy. This trend highlights frustrations prevalent within activist circles over the perceived inadequate climate policies of the Biden administration. Although grassroots movements may activate during Trump’s presidency, Biden had initially gained momentum by advocating for ambitious climate legislation during his campaign.

Throughout Biden's time, climate progress remained hampered, particularly with his ambitious Build Back Better initiative failing due to opposition from moderate Democrats and Republicans alike. Activists have identified these compromises as detrimental, undermining the overall narrative of success surrounding the administration. Joshi said, "I've found it disheartening to witness so-called leaders claiming action when basic priorities have been neglected." Overall, this sentiment paints the administration’s climate record as mixed, albeit containing notable achievements.

The pathway forward seems bifurcated; as pro-Trump factions maintain high support for oil and gas, activist movements targeting this administration could renew vigor among younger voters and politicians. Grassroots organizations are already mobilizing, fostering discussions on how to leverage the political momentum created by Trump's pending policies. Joshi pointed out, "We are gearing up to challenge actions taken by the Trump administration to mitigate climate change. We must hold those with power accountable for their decisions and impact.” This proactive spirit within communities, particularly among younger generations, suggests the potential for significant resistance against unfavorable climate policies.

Despite the challenges Trump’s presidency may bring to climate initiatives, some conservatives are realizing the need for ecological stewardship. Barnard’s perspective indicates this growing consciousness, albeit shaped by the lens of economic pragmatism rather than environmental urgency. With accusations of fabric and overreach against both major political parties, climate dialogue seems ripe for innovation amid opposing party narratives and priorities.

Despite the challenges posed by Trump’s return to power, many climate activists remain hopeful. The real task for the coming years will be reconciling the dire imperatives of climate science with the dynamics of American politics—a balance struck not only through top-down policies but also grassroots movements demanding authenticity and accountability.
