Tropical Storm Garance Triggers Alert For La Réunion

The island prepares for potential cyclonic conditions as storm approaches, prompting school closures and public safety warnings.

La Réunion is bracing for the impending arrival of Tropical Storm Garance, as the island has been officially placed under orange cyclonic alert, effective from Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at 14:00 local time. The prefecture of La Réunion announced this precautionary measure due to the approaching weather system, which is currently classified as a moderate tropical storm but is expected to intensify and possibly develop the characteristics of a tropical cyclone.

Météo-France has indicated the storm’s unusual path, progressing from west to east instead of the typical east-to-west movement seen with most hurricanes and cyclones in the Indian Ocean. According to meteorologists, the conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly starting Wednesday night and continuing through Friday, with Garance forecasted to pass within 70 kilometers of the island. The intuition is significant: forecasts predict heavy rainfall, strong winds, and very rough seas.

Laurent Lenoble, the Secretary General of the Prefecture, urged residents to take precautions, emphasizing the need to prepare by stocking up on food and water. He stated, "We call on the Réunionnais to prepare and stock up on food and water." The prefecture noted, "This alert indicates significant meteorological danger to the island within 24 hours," reinforcing the seriousness of the situation.

The response to this alert has led to the immediate closure of schools, daycares, and other youth services beginning Wednesday afternoon. Interestingly, classes will be conducted on Wednesday morning to allow students to complete their studies before the shutdown. "There is a strong probability schools will remain closed until Friday," Lenoble added, hinting at the likelihood of continued disruptions.

Port activities will also be suspended on Wednesday, and changes to flight schedules from the international airport have been announced, impacting travel plans for many. Residents who rely on public transport or planned outings are encouraged to stay indoors and limit their movements as authorities monitor the cyclone’s path.

Céline Jauffret, the regional director of Météo-France for the Indian Ocean, referred to Garance as presenting "a serious and important threat" during press conferences. She noted, "These systems can evolve rapidly," emphasizing the unpredictability and potential danger posed by the storm.

The latest weather updates indicate Garance was located 475 kilometers away from La Réunion on Tuesday afternoon, with expectations placing it closer by Thursday. The alert status has historical significance for the region, as previously, the island faced devastating impacts from Cyclone Belal, which hit very close to the coast in January 2024, resulting in fatalities and destruction estimated at over 100 million euros.

Overall, as La Réunion prepares for what could be significant weather events, authorities urge residents to stay informed and take all necessary precautions. The island's safety protocols are fully engaged, and any changes to the alert status will be communicated to the public without delay. The government, as well as emergency services, remain on high alert and ready to respond should the situation escalate.

With the potential for severe weather on the horizon, the communities of La Réunion are reinforcing their readiness and encouraging one another to prioritize safety above all. Regular updates and advisories, stressing the importance of preparedness, are being disseminated through various channels to keep everyone informed as Tropical Storm Garance draws nearer.
