Tributes have been pouring in for three remarkable women who recently passed away, each leaving behind lasting legacies filled with love, laughter, and community spirit. Clara Politis, Janice Martin, and Marjorie Lee Brothwell, though different in many ways, shared the common thread of impacting those around them.
Clara Plonk Politis departed this world just before the new year, on December 30, 2024, at nearly 101 years of age. A native of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, she grew up on her family's farm during the Great Depression. Clara was raised with strong values, where hard work was not just encouraged but necessary. Her love for education led her to The Plonk School of Creative Arts, where her aunts inspired her to nurture her voice and talents.
Her vast contributions to education were honored, particularly her decades spent teaching elementary school students in the Ann Arbor Public School System. According to the Ann Arbor News, former students frequently approached her years later to express their fond memories of being in her class. Clara had a spirit of joy, vibrant even as she approached her centennial mark. "She understood how to be a great friend and continued to make new friends until her final days," the publication noted.
Clara’s life will be celebrated with two memorial services, one scheduled for January 18, 2025, at the First Presbyterian Church of Ann Arbor and another on April 26, 2025, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Kings Mountain, NC. Her family, including sons Ted and George, and her many grandchildren are deeply grateful for the caregivers who supported her during her final months.
Another soul deeply cherished by her family was Janice “Jan” Martin, who passed away surrounded by loved ones on December 28, 2024, at the age of 81. Born December 11, 1943, in Lewistown, Montana, Jan was remembered for her quick wit and for her love of family gatherings, always joking, "Family is like fish, after 3 days they start to stink." This humorous perspective provided insight not only to her character but also her vibrant approach to life.
Jan had two daughters, Michelle and Dawnette, and was married to Bud Martin until his passing in 2001. Work defined part of her life as well, with long tenure at Buttrey’s and Albertsons until she retired. She enjoyed games like bingo and spending time with her family, even if it was kept within manageable days.
Across state lines, Marjorie Lee Brothwell also passed on December 28, 2024, at the age of 95, continuing the thread of remarkable women illuminating their communities. Marjorie’s roots trace back to Wyoming, where she was born on December 9, 1929. She married Roy Eugene Brothwell, with whom she shared nearly six decades of devotion until his death in 2010. She fitted her faith seamlessly within every aspect of her life, leading Bible studies and engaging with her church family at Rocky Mountain Community Church.
Her eye for detail led her to enjoy sewing, even taking on part-time work at Northwest Fabrics. "Her life modeled love and she was actively involved in Bible studies much of her adult life," noted those close to her. Throughout her lengthy life, she raised three children and was proud of her five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Memorial services for Marjorie will be held at Rocky Mountain Community Church on January 11, 2025, solidifying her commitment to community work and faith. Her absence will leave a void for many, who fondly recall her unmatched warmth and wisdom.
Though they have all passed, Clara, Jan, and Marjorie remain beacons of love and laughter. Their memories will undoubtedly live on through the countless individuals they have touched throughout their very full lives. These obituaries open the door for reflection on how one individual can shape their community positively.
