JOHANNESBURG, Mar 20: South Africa’s prominent Hindu leader and lawyer Ashwin Trikamjee died on Thursday after an illness. He was 80. Trikamjee was the president of the South African Hindu Maha Sabha and a board director at the 1860 Heritage Centre.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep sadness at Trikamjee’s passing, stating, “I offer my condolences to the family, friends and associates of this outstanding icon of service to our nation who has passed on at the age of 80.” Ramaphosa acknowledged Trikamjee’s deep spiritual devotion, which extended beyond his Hindu affiliation, highlighting his advocacy for tolerance and collaboration among diverse religious communities in South Africa.
Born into a challenging socio-political landscape, Trikamjee became a Black Consciousness activist during the apartheid era. He played a significant role by leading the Durban Central component of the Natal Indian Congress, an organization founded by Mahatma Gandhi to combat racial discrimination and colonial oppression. His legacy as the first chairman of the National Religious Leaders Forum reflects his commitment to reconciliation and unity.
Throughout his distinguished career, Trikamjee also held several prestigious positions, including former secretary-general of the International Bar Association for Southern Africa and Acting Judge in the High Court of South Africa. Additionally, he was a council member of the SA Soccer Federation, chairperson of the National Soccer League, and a vice president and founding member of the South African Football Association. Notably, he also chaired the SAFA Appeals Board.
His funeral service for former president Nelson Mandela, where he recited Sanskrit Shlokas, gained him international recognition and showcased his profound connection to cultural heritage.
Since the announcement of his death, tributes have poured in from various circles, celebrating not only his achievements but also his personal attributes. The 1860 Heritage Centre praised him as “a constant source of strength, wisdom, and guidance.” They reflected on his legacy of love, kindness, and compassion, stating that they would deeply miss him.
Social media has been alight with heartfelt messages of condolences. Reshini Misra expressed, “Ashwin Trikamjee's legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will continue to inspire us all. May his memory be a blessing.” Daya Chetty shared her sentiments reminiscing about Trikamjee’s presidency during the apartheid era when the Football was segregated, calling him “a true legend and ambassador for the Indian Community.”
Kamini Naidoo described her sorrow, stating, “Absolutely sad news. Heartfelt condolences to the family. A true legend ever so humble and loving.” These tributes demonstrate the profound impact that Trikamjee had on individuals and the broader community.
President Ramaphosa encapsulated this sentiment by highlighting Trikamjee’s unwavering dedication to community improvement across various fields, noting that he dedicated his life to enhancing the lives of those around him.
