Trevi Fountain Reopens Ahead Of Jubilee Year

Historic Rome monument undergoes renovations as millions prepare to visit for Holy Year festivities.

Rome’s famous Trevi Fountain has once again opened its doors to visitors after undergoing extensive renovations, just in time for the inauguration of the 2025 Jubilee Holy Year. The iconic landmark, celebrated for both its architectural brilliance and as one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions, was revealed to the public on Sunday, December 22, 2024, after three months of maintenance work costing €327,000 (approximately $341,000).

Located at the heart of Rome, the Trevi Fountain’s restoration was necessary to combat years of degradation from heavy foot traffic and pollution. The project focused on cleaning dirt and limescale buildup from its surfaces, which were particularly affected due to its location where water splashes frequently. "The fountain tells the story of our culture and identity; it needed to be preserved for future generations," said Claudio Parisi Presicce, Rome’s superintendent for cultural heritage.

To manage the overwhelming number of visitors expected during the Jubilee, which is anticipated to attract millions to the Eternal City, city officials have imposed strict access regulations. Now, only 400 visitors will be allowed at any time to prevent overcrowding, creating space for visitors to appreciate the fountain’s beauty without the usual hustle and bustle. “This way, visitors will have ample opportunity to observe it and understand the values it embodies,” Presicce emphasized.

The unique coin-tossing tradition, famed worldwide, remains alive at the Trevi. While the fountain was being restored, visitors were still able to toss coins, albeit from makeshift arrangements allowing the tradition to continue. It's estimated this practice generates around €1.5 million ($1.6 million) annually, funds typically donated to the Catholic charity Caritas. This charity has received these donations for the past 15 years, reinforcing the fountain’s role as not just a beauty spot but part of the city’s charitable fabric.

Mayor Roberto Gualtieri confirmed the current entry will be free of charge, but he noted future plans could involve implementing a €2 ($2.20) ticket fee. This modest amount would aid maintenance costs and help sustain the fountain’s upkeep going forward. Once inside, visitors will have 30 minutes to soak in the incredible artistry and history encapsulated within the fountain.

The restoration projects aren’t merely aesthetic; they play a larger role as part of Rome's preparations for the Holy Year, which Pope Francis will formally inaugurate by opening the Holy Door of St. Peter's Basilica on Christmas Eve. The Jubilee is celebrated by the Catholic Church every 25 to 50 years and is expected to draw significant global attendance.

Officials predict around 38 million pilgrims to visit during the upcoming Jubilee, which begins on December 24, setting the stage for intense renovations and management challenges across Rome's ancient sites. Enhanced visitor experience remains at the forefront of these initiatives, ensuring visitors can fully appreciate their historic surroundings without overwhelming noise and congestion.

Rome's Trevi Fountain, completed in 1762, is renowned for its late Baroque style, where various sculptures depict ocean goddess Oceanus commanded by Tritons. This historic site continues to be featured prominently not only for its breathtaking design but also for its symbolic value of hope—the belief held by travelers tossing coins—from lovers to weary explorers—that they will return to this mesmerizing city.

For now, visitors can enjoy the rejuvenated fountain without feeder charges; the city remains cautious, ensuring the historical significance of the site is preserved and celebrated through future generations. Improved visitor flow and access lead to hopes of maintaining the fountain's grandeur and ensuring visitors leave with lasting memories of their times.

Celebrations surrounding the Jubilee will involve numerous sacred events, and the Trevi Fountain is set to play its own role within this religious and cultural festival. The expectation surrounding this event signifies Rome’s commitment to safeguarding its storied past through thoughtful restoration and responsible tourism.
