Trenton Residents Face Boil Water Advisory After Main Break

Water main damage leads to precautionary measures impacting local households and businesses.

A significant water main break has led to a boil water advisory affecting Trenton and surrounding areas, as city officials urge residents to refrain from using tap water without boiling it first. The City of Quinte West announced on February 6, 2025, the advisory will remain until at least February 8, 2025.

The advisory was issued following emergency repairs after construction contractors accidentally damaged the main water line during their work near the Trenton water treatment facility. Mayor Jim Harrison stated, "Around 12:30 p.m., we had a contractor working in the area of the Trenton water treatment plant... Staffers found it quickly and isolated the affected area then water service was restored, but due to the significance of the break, the boil water advisory was issued."

All customers reliant on Trenton Water Service, including those from Carrying Place, Prince Edward Estates, and Kingfisher Cove, are impacted by this advisory. Residents are advised to bring all water meant for consumption to a rapid rolling boil for at least one minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or any other domestic purposes. Health officials have stressed the importance of this measure, especially when it concerns vulnerable populations such as infants and the elderly.

Although city workers have restored service following the incident, the advisory will stay active until testing confirms the water quality meets the accepted safety standards. Public health officials have noted, "The boil water advisory is in response to damage accidentally caused to a water main in Trenton by construction contractors doing work in the area."

City officials also recommend residents monitor their water usage and conserve it as much as possible during the advisory period. Non-essential water uses, including lawn watering and car washing, should be kept to a minimum. Bulk water services for bulk haulers at the Trenton and Bayside bulk water stations have been suspended, but those services remain available at the Frankford/Batawa bulk water station, located at 65 Parry Drive, Batawa.

If any residents experience low water pressure, they are encouraged to notify the City of Quinte West at 613-392-2841. The city has provided additional guidance for residents to stay updated about the situation through local media, the city’s social media channels, and municipal websites. Public health officials have also advised residents who notice changes in their water pressure to reach out for assistance.

Experts from Hastings, Prince Edward Public Health encourage staying informed through their offices, reachable at 613-966-5500, for those needing more detailed information about safe water practices during such advisories. While citizens are urged to take effective precautions during this advisory, officials are actively working to restore confidence in local water safety.

The boil water advisory remains as additional testing is conducted. Residents are advised to stay vigilant and continue boiling their tap water until the advisory has officially been lifted. Further updates will be communicated through the channels mentioned as new information becomes available. This incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of water systems and the importance of immediate response to any disruptions.
