Australia’s Travis Head has been declared fit to play in the eagerly anticipated Boxing Day Test against India after overcoming concerns about a quad strain. Head, who was injured on the final day of the third Test at the Gabba, passed a rigorous fitness test on Christmas morning at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
The news is a huge relief for the Australian team as the series is currently tied at 1-1, raising the stakes for the fourth Test which commences on December 26, 2023. Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed Head’s fitness after he completed several sprints and batted hard during the optional training session held at the MCG. “Travis is good to go, he’ll play. He ticked off some final things today and yesterday, but no stress, no worries about injury for Trav,” Cummins said.
This series against India has proven tough for Australia’s batters, with Head stepping up to lead the scoring efforts. He has amassed 409 runs at an impressive average of 81.80 so far, including centuries at both Adelaide and Brisbane, establishing himself as India’s premier target. With Head’s addition to the lineup, Australia hopes to not only recover their momentum but also regain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Potentially complicate matters for the players and their performance is the anticipated heat. Weather forecasts predict temperatures will soar to 40°C on the first day of play, which could influence batting strategies right from the toss. Andrew McDonald, the Australian coach, commented on the conditions, saying, “Traditionally it’s been bowl first at the MCG, but with the heat around, it looks similar but probably a little bit worse than what it has been in previous years. This wicket might offer the batters a little bit more as the game draws on.”
Aside from Head’s return, the Australian squad will see another two changes, including the debut of Sam Konstas, the fourth-youngest Australian Test player ever. Scott Boland has also been confirmed to return to the fold, stepping in for the injured Josh Hazlewood. Boland, known for his sensational debut when he took 6-7 against England, will be playing at his home ground.
McDonald humorously reiterated Boland’s significance to the squad, saying, “If we didn’t pick Scotty here – and I know I’m not allowed to declare the team because that's Pat’s job – but I don’t think I’m coming to the ground Boxing Day if Scotty’s not in the 11.”
The excitement for the Boxing Day Test extends beyond just player fitness; it’s also about the atmosphere and tradition the event brings. Fans are expected to fill the stands at the MCG, making the event not just another match but a significant occasion within the cricket calendar.
With Head back on the field, Australia aims to push forward and reclaim control over the series. Both teams will be eager to seize the moment, making the upcoming contest one not to be missed. Expect high stakes, fervent competition, and perhaps, some of the most thrilling cricket seen at the legendary MCG this season as they face off on Boxing Day.
