Hamburg customs officials made a significant drug bust when they stopped a 21-year-old traveler at Hamburg Airport, who was attempting to smuggle 19 kilograms of marijuana into Germany. The marijuana, valued at nearly 100,000 euros, was discovered on March 19, 2025, as the young man tried to pass through the 'Green Channel' designated for goods exempt from declaration.
Arriving from Bangkok via Dubai, the traveler claimed that he was only planning to spend a few days in a hotel in Hamburg. His intentions, however, did not excuse the serious nature of his crime. Annalena Braasch, a spokesperson for the Hauptzollamt Itzehoe, explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest: “On inquiry by colleagues, the traveler explained he only wanted to stay as a tourist for three days in a hotel in Hamburg.”
Despite the legalization of cannabis possession in amounts of up to 25 grams in public and 50 grams in private spaces in Germany since April 2024, the importer of narcotics is still strictly regulated. Importing marijuana remains illegal, and violators face harsh penalties, including a prison sentence of up to five years or significant fines.
The customs officials have initiated criminal proceedings against the traveler. Following the discovery, he was placed in custody while further investigations are being conducted by the Hamburg Customs Investigation Office and the Hamburg Public Prosecutor's Office. As part of their ongoing efforts to tackle drug smuggling, officials emphasized the importance of enforcing laws against narcotics importation.
