Travel Industry Trends: Off-The-Beaten-Path Experiences Rise

Experts predict growth for lesser-known destinations and sustainable travel by 2025

The travel industry is rapidly transforming as we approach 2025, with analysts pinpointing several trends shaping the future of tourism. Caroline Bremner, Senior Head of Travel Research at Euromonitor International, has identified key movements defining this evolution, emphasizing the industry’s allure even amid economic challenges.

"Despite the current economic hurdles, travel is thriving, driven by immersive experiences, intentional travel, connected trips, and alignment with personal values," says Bremner. Her insights highlight the industry's pivot toward sustainable and people-centric models, which are becoming increasingly important for long-term resilience.

Alongside this, there's been noted growth in demand for off-the-beaten-path journeys. According to the Travel’s New Age of Influence Report, produced by The Future Laboratory and IHG Hotels & Resorts, travelers are expressing stronger desires for rural engagements and authentic cultural experiences. "Traveling to this year’s popular destinations may be tempting as you see them pop up on your Instagram feed, but with these trendy locations come high prices, large crowds, and long wait-times," warns IHG Hotels.

Statistics reveal this trend is gaining momentum, particularly among younger generations. The report indicates 68% of Gen Z and Millennials are consistently searching for new outdoor inspirations and activities. The rise of overtourism has compelled many to explore lesser-known destinations, with hospitality companies reacting by opening new properties situated outside typical tourist attractions.

Tim Hentschel, Chief of Communications at HotelPlanner, states, "With the inevitable overtourism in major tourist destinations, larger crowds and naturally higher accommodation prices have led travelers to increasingly seek less-visited destinations. These locations offer both adventure and affordability." He cites Albania as particularly desirable, with hotel demand surging by 93% for 2024 compared to the previous year.

Similarly, eDreams ODIGEO's Year in Travel Report sheds light on the growth patterns for travel destinations. Notable increases are observed for regions such as Kuala Lumpur (+49%), Hurghada, Egypt (+38%), and Santiago de Chile (+36%). This pattern suggests travelers are motivated to discover fresh regions blending cultural exploration with adventure tourism.

New hospitality offerings are poised to cater to this burgeoning demand for unique locations. Sri Lanka, noted as one of the hot destinations for 2025 according to travel specialists at The Ultimate Travel Company, currently provides opportunities for immersive experiences. Sri Lanka’s hospitality sector is preparing for new openings, including hotels like Goatfell, which is situated among tea bushes near Nuwara Eliya, and Uga Halloowella which is located by the breathtaking Castlereagh Reservoir.

Aqua Expeditions has also entered the scene with plans for new voyages to West Papua, charting previously unvisited territories aboard luxury vessels. Scheduled for launch in November 2025, this initiative promotes exploration of the indigenous culture, wildlife, and natural beauty seldom seen by tourists. Beyond cultural insights, the waters surrounding the region entice with exceptional snorkeling and rare marine life encounters.

Italy is also adapting to solve the demand for unique travel by introducing destinations such as La Darbia, which is tucked away near the tranquil Lake Orta. Featuring eco-friendly accommodations and organic culinary experiences, it supports the growing trend for sustainable and serene travel experiences.

Australia is not left behind, with Scott Dunn's What’s Hot for Travel report indicating the Kimberley and Northern Territories as redefining Australia’s tourism appeal. With their majestic landscapes, these regions present travelers with unique perspectives. “Underpinned by growing interest, our guests are eager to use travel as their medium for discovery, deep immersion, and transformation,” says Ellen Fraser, Scott Dunn’s senior travel specialist for Australia and Asia.

Fraser outlines unique ventures like the Paspaley Pearl boutique expedition cruise—providing intimate explorations through the region accompanied by expert naturalists. Such experiences offer access to unspoiled natural wonders, hospitable cultures, and opportunities for sustainable tourism practices.

Looking to the future, it appears clear the travel industry is gearing toward more than just highlights; it’s about deep, transformative experiences and respecting the places visited. With the interplay of searching for authenticity, embracing sustainability, and exploring the road less traveled, the tourism sector will likely find itself reinventing the way we view travel itself.
