Transgender Man Sam Nordquist Found Dead After Brutal Torture

Five suspects charged with second-degree murder as investigation uncovers horrific abuse endured by the victim.

Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man originally from Minnesota, was found dead last week, leading to outrage and horror as authorities reveal the circumstances surrounding his death. While initially reported missing on February 9, 2025, Nordquist's case transitioned from a missing persons investigation to homicide when his remains were discovered on February 13, 2025, in Yates County, New York, approximately 50 miles southeast of Rochester.

According to the New York State Police, Nordquist had endured horrific acts of violence and torture over the course of several months. "We are here today to provide an update on the case of Sam Nordquist, who was originally reported missing... Unfortunately, we must now confirm this case has transitioned from one of missing person to homicide investigation," stated Trooper Lynnea Crane during a press conference.

Authorities have arrested five individuals, all of whom have been charged with second-degree murder: Precious Arzuaga, 38; Patrick Goodwin, 30; Kyle Sage, 33; Jennifer Quijano, 30; and Emily Motyka, 19. They are all being held on charges associated with the death of Nordquist, who had reportedly been living at Patty’s Lodge with some of the suspects prior to his disappearance.

Captain Kelly Swift of the New York State Police described the brutal nature of the crime, saying, "This is one of the most horrific crimes I’ve ever investigated." Major Kevin Sucher added, "No human being should have to endure what Sam endured," emphasizing the violence he experienced leading to his untimely death.

Evidence has revealed Nordquist suffered prolonged physical and psychological abuse from December 2024 until just weeks before his remains were found. The suspects were apprehended after police searched the motel where Nordquist was last seen, leading to the collection of significant evidence, including personal items and electronic equipment.

Not only has this incident sparked outrage, but it has highlighted fears within the LGBTQ+ community, with many questioning whether Nordquist's murder was motivated by hate. The Rochester LGBTQ+ Together advocacy group expressed its deep anger, stating, "The epidemic of violence against Trans folx... is a direct consequence of the ignorance and hatred..." They emphasized the pressing need for societal changes to combat such heinous acts.

Rochester City Council members responded to this tragedy with statements reaffirming their commitment to protect transgender rights, ensuring safety for all residents. Council members Mary Lupien, Stanley Martin, and Kim Smith declared, "Our Trans and LGBTQIA+ residents are, and have always been, integral to the fabric of our communities." This declaration reiterates the community's determination to stand strong against violence.

Nordquist's story resonates deeply with many, as family members recall his kindness and outgoing nature. His mother, Linda Nordquist, described her son with love, sharing, "He would give you the shirt off his back. Very kind, loved his family, loved his nieces and nephew, very outgoing, worked hard." His last communication with family was on January 1, just weeks before he was reported missing.

Authorities have not ruled out classifying Nordquist's murder as a hate crime as they seek to establish the connection between the victim and the suspects. "Our investigation has revealed a deeply disturbing pattern of abuse... This case is far worse than anything I've seen throughout my 20-year career," Captain Swift stated, emphasizing the complexity of determining the motivations behind the crimes committed against Nordquist.

The community mourns the loss of Sam Nordquist, united not only by grief but by determination to seek justice for all victims of violence. Local advocates continue to call for justice and urge anyone with information about the case to come forward. Their hope is to not only bring closure for Nordquist's family but to raise awareness about the dangers many transgender individuals face daily due to societal violence and hatred.
