Trail Blazers Clinch 116-107 Comeback Win Against Heat

Anfernee Simons and Deandre Ayton lead Portland to victory amid Miami's injury struggles.

The Portland Trail Blazers secured a commendable victory over the Miami Heat on January 21, 2025, defeating them 116-107 at Kaseya Center. This game was pivotal for the Blazers as they managed to bounce back from disappointing performances earlier this month, showcasing impressive teamwork and resilience amid various injuries.

Leading the charge for Portland was Anfernee Simons, contributing 24 points with effective shooting from beyond the arc—finishing 6 of 12 on three-point attempts. Deandre Ayton also made his mark, leaving his indelible stamp on the game with 22 points and 15 rebounds. This double-double was instrumental, particularly as he made 11 out of 14 field-goal attempts, resulting in an impressive shooting efficiency of 78.6%.

The game did not start all smooth sailing for the Blazers. Despite entering the contest with several players facing injury woes, including Kris Murray (chest) and Donovan Clingan (ankle), they regrouped and found their footing. Their starting lineup featured Simons, Scoot Henderson, Deni Avdija, Jerami Grant, and Ayton, which proved effective against the Heat.

For Miami, the absence of Tyler Herro was felt strongly, as he was sidelined due to tightness in his right groin. This marked Herro’s first game missed this season and left the Heat searching for alternative offensive options. Duncan Robinson emerged as the leading scorer for Miami with 22 points, combining efficiency and range but could not single-handedly propel his team to victory. He shot 6 of 12 from three-point territory, trying to fill the gap left by Herro.

The game’s momentum shifted dramatically throughout its course. Miami started strong, leading by as much as 10 points early on and maintaining a moderate edge as the first quarter ended. But as the game progressed, the Trail Blazers gained control, outscoring Miami 63-39 across the second and third quarters. It was during this stretch where Portland showcased their ability to find offensive rhythm, capitalizing on defensive lapses from the Heat.

The Blazers built their lead to as much as 27 points, leaving Miami scrambling for answers. Although the Heat mounted a late comeback—initiated by a lineup featuring Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Kel’el Ware—their efforts were too late as they managed to cut the deficit to just eight points but fell short. The final push from Miami highlighted their resilience, but the damage had already been done.

The absence of key players also weighed down Miami's performance, where they reported missing several contributors including Keshad Johnson (shoulder) and Josh Richardson (heel), exacerbated by the mounting pressure to perform without their star shooter Herro. The Heat's struggles on the three-point line became evident as they went from making seven of their first nine attempts to missing 19 consecutive three-point shots, illustrating a stark shift in shooting percentage which hindered their ability to mount any substantial comeback.

Defensively, the Trail Blazers were able to exploit gaps within Miami’s armaments, showcasing their own defensive prowess and securing significant rebounds, particularly thanks to Ayton’s performance. His prowess on the boards stifled Miami's efforts for second-chance opportunities, turning failed Heat possessions back against them.

After the game, questions loomed over the Heat's future performances. Coach Erik Spoelstra alluded to the shifting dynamics of their starting lineup, expressing the need for improvement and adaptation especially following such high-pressure games. Miami’s team dynamic has changed rapidly this season, facing new challenges with rotation and roles as they struggle to find the right progression.

This win elevates the Trail Blazers to 15-28, marking their first back-to-back victory since the first week of January. The victory holds not just statistical importance but also bolsters Portland’s morale as they move forward seeking consistency. On the other hand, Miami now holds a record of 21-21 as they look to recover from this setback, with hopes pinned on the return of Herro as they prepare to engage with the Milwaukee Bucks next.
