Officer Michael Horan, 44, tragically lost his life during an armed confrontation at a Food Lion grocery store in Greensboro, North Carolina, on December 23, 2023.
The Greensboro Police Department reported Horan was responding to a call about a man with a firearm when he was shot, marking another sobering reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers daily.
Horan, originally from Bucks County, Pennsylvania, had joined the Greensboro Police Department in 2017 and was known for his bravery and commitment to public service. Assistant Police Chief MJ Harris described him as 'an excellent officer' with 'an outstanding reputation' both within the department and the community.
Details surrounding the incident remain under investigation by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. According to authorities, Horan arrived at the scene following the 911 call but was fatally shot 'after a brief struggle' without having time to draw or fire his weapon.
Tarell Isaac McMillian, 34, of Greensboro, was arrested near the scene following the incident and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently being held at the Guilford County Jail without bond, as the investigation continues to unravel the sequence of events leading to Horan's death.
For the community mourning Horan's loss, the situation resonates deeply. Horan's service extended beyond his law enforcement duties; he was also known for his roles as a lifeguard and rescue instructor at Beach Haven, New Jersey, from 1995 to 2017.
Michael Lawrence, the former chief of the Beach Haven beach patrol, shared fond memories of Horan, recalling him as 'a consummate professional' who had a unique ability to make people feel at ease. 'He just made people laugh. He made people comfortable. You just wanted to be around him,' Lawrence told reporters. Horan also served proudly as part of the U.S. Coast Guard.
His bravery was evident even on vacation. While at Emerald Isle, North Carolina, with his family, Horan swam against treacherous rip currents to save a man and his son, showcasing his dedication to helping others at any cost.
The loss of Officer Horan has sparked community efforts to support his family. A fundraiser organized under the 'Help A Hero' initiative has been established to assist Horan’s loved ones during this devastating time. Harris urged the public to keep Horan's family, friends, and fellow officers 'in your thoughts and prayers.'
City officials have also expressed their condolences, with Greensboro City Manager Trey Davis stating, 'To put it simply, we're heartbroken.' The community is expected to come together as funeral arrangements for Horan are being prepared.
