Fans and fellow artists mourn as South Korea remembers the musical legacy of the beloved 78-year-old artist.

On July 7, South Korea mourned the passing of beloved trot singer Song Daekwan, who died at the age of 78. According to Yonhap News, he was transported to the emergency room at Seoul National University Hospital after reporting discomfort but unfortunately succumbed during treatment. The cause of death is reported to be heart failure.

Song Daekwan was known for his significant contributions to the trot genre, having risen to prominence with hits like "Good-hearted Uncle" (인정 많은 아저씨) upon his debut back in 1967. His song "The Day of Sunshine" (해뜰날) released in 1975, brought him unprecedented fame and solidified his status as one of the legends of trot music.

His legacy includes several other popular tracks, such as "Because of Love" (정 때문에), and "A Ticket to Go" (차표 한 장). Sources indicate Song had been battling chronic health issues over the years and had undergone several surgeries, including one for stomach ulcers five years ago.

Following the news of his passing, many stories have resurfaced, particularly one involving fellow singer Tae Jin-ah. Reports from News1 highlight how Tae supported Song financially after his stomach surgery, giving him several million won for living expenses and treatment costs. Song Daekwan reflected on this act of kindness, expressing his gratitude and surprise at his friend's generosity, humorously recalling how Tae had visited him during his recovery.

"I was shocked when he brought me the money and told me to rest well," Song said. "It made me cry to think about how little I knew about my friend's true feelings." It showcases the close bond the two shared throughout their careers.

The void left by Song’s departure is palpable across the music scene, particularly among fans who grew up listening to his heartfelt ballads during the golden age of trot music.

Song's funeral will be held at the funeral home of Seoul National University Hospital, where friends and fans are expected to gather to pay their respects. The outpouring of grief is evident on social media platforms, where tributes are being shared, celebrating his life and the impact he had on Korean music.
