Former Brisbane Lions player remembered for his impact on and off the field, leaving behind family and many friends.

Former Brisbane Lions player Troy Selwood has died at the age of 40, as confirmed by his family on February 4, 2024. Selwood, who was the brother of renowned AFL players Joel, Adam, and Scott Selwood, was known for his pivotal contributions to Australian Rules football both on and off the field.

No details were provided about the cause of his death, but the Selwood family expressed their heartbreak through a statement released to the public. "We are heartbroken by the loss of our son, brother and father, Troy this morning. We will miss Troy more than words can express," the family shared.

The family fondly remembered Troy as "a much loved and loving member" of their household, noting how he brought joy and light to those who knew him. Selwood was described as "a loving son of Maree and Bryce, a supportive and caring brother to Adam, Joel, and Scott, and a doting father of beautiful children Tom and Sadie." The family added, "We will miss Troy’s bravery, his humour, his deep thinking, his love and compassion.”

Troy Selwood was drafted with the 19th pick in the 2002 AFL draft, joining the Brisbane Lions when the team was celebrated for its remarkable stint of premiership victories. Debuting round one of the 2005 season, Selwood played 75 games for the Lions, leaving his mark as he kicked 11 goals during his tenure until 2010.

After being delisted at the end of the 2010 season, Troy returned to his home state of Victoria. He took on the role of captain for Geelong's VFL team, leading them to the premiership title in 2012 at Docklands Stadium, before retiring from competitive football the following year.

His commitment to the sport extended beyond his playing days. Troy worked in various off-field roles focusing on talent development within the Geelong Football Club for over 10 years. He held positions including Talent Identification Manager and Academy Manager and was pivotal in promoting the aspirations of young players aiming to fulfill their dreams of playing elite football.

Andrew Dillon, the CEO of the AFL, praised Selwood's commitment to young athletes, stating, "Troy was an incredible advocate for AFL Talent Pathways programs... he will be sadly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to work with him." Dillon emphasized how Selwood consistently prioritized the needs of young players and created supportive environments for their development.

Steve Hocking, CEO of the Geelong Football Club, echoed Dillon's sentiments, saying, "We are extremely saddened to learn of Troy’s passing. The news today has had a deep impact on many current and former players and staff. Troy had great spirit and energy and was someone who always cared about others." He also highlighted Selwood's passion for nurturing young talent, saying, "He had a passion for working with young people and helping them achieve their dreams of playing elite football."

The Selwood family thanked all those who supported Troy throughout his life and expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and memories being shared by friends and teammates. "Troy achieved many great things, from his time as a young man and student to his influential role as an AFL player and his later achievements at Geelong Grammar School," they noted.

Reflecting on Selwood's life, the family requested privacy as they mourn the significant loss of their beloved member. They believe many people will come forth to share their stories and memories of Troy, indicating the lasting impression he left on the hearts and lives of those he encountered.

The football community remembers Troy Selwood not only for his career on the field but for the incredible impact he had on various lives, representing the essence of teamwork, dedication, and heart within Australian Rules football.
