The attack occurred on the evening of May 7, 2025, around 6:40 PM, as the victim was closing the doors to the Auditorium Maximum. The assailant reportedly used an axe in the attack, resulting in the porter's death at the scene due to extensive head injuries.
Professor Alojzy Z. Nowak, the rector of the University of Warsaw, expressed his profound sorrow during a press conference held the following day. "This is probably the worst event that has taken place at the University of Warsaw, and perhaps also at other universities after World War II," he stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation. The rector offered condolences to the family of the deceased, emphasizing that the university would provide care in every respect. "I extend my deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of our colleague, her children, husband, and all loved ones," he said.
The incident took a darker turn when it was revealed that the attacker was a student at the university. "The university is experiencing this tragedy threefold. Firstly, because we lost our colleague, a mother of three children and an excellent employee. Secondly, the perpetrator was a student of the University of Warsaw. Thirdly, a university guard was also seriously injured during the intervention," said Nowak, visibly shaken.
The guard, who intervened during the attack, suffered severe injuries, including cuts to both hands and his head, and was hospitalized in serious condition. The rector praised the guard's bravery, stating, "He is a very brave person because he stood up for his colleague, demonstrating immense humanity." He assured that the university would honor the guard's actions and that they would do everything possible to support the victims' families.
In response to the tragedy, the university has initiated discussions with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education regarding legislative changes aimed at enhancing security at universities.
