TROY, Michigan -- A tragic incident at the Oxford Center, a medical facility specializing in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, has left the community mourning after a hyperbaric chamber exploded, resulting in the death of 5-year-old Thomas Cooper from Royal Oak, Michigan.

The disturbing event unfolded Friday morning around 8 a.m. at the facility located north of Detroit. Emergency responders arrived on the scene to find Cooper deceased inside the chamber, and his mother, who was standing beside the chamber, sustained injuries to her arms during the explosion. Troy police Lieutenant Ben Hancock stated, "We don’t know exactly what the child was being treated for at the center today." Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, which is offered at the center, involves placing patients inside special chambers where pure oxygen is administered at pressures two to three times higher than normal.
