A tragic incident on the A4 Autostrada has claimed the life of Chiara Moscardi, a 26-year-old psychologist dedicated to helping the vulnerable. The accident occurred on December 17, 2024, around 1 PM, near Noventa di Piave, when her service van was struck by a heavy truck.
According to reports, the van was stationary on the emergency lane after experiencing mechanical failure when it was hit by the truck, leading to devastating consequences. Chiara died instantly from the impact, leaving behind not just her family but also many who admired her work.
Chiara Moscardi hailed from Rovigo and recently transitioned to work with the cooperative Cosep, which focuses on social services for the Municipality of Venice. Having graduated with a degree in psychology from the University of Padua, she was passionate about supporting marginalized individuals, particularly the homeless and those struggling with addictions. It’s said she often worked overnight, traversing the streets to protect those sleeping outdoors.
Following the accident, both Mayor Luigi Brugnaro of Venice and Mayor Valeria Cittadin of Rovigo expressed their condolences. Brugnaro stated, “A nome di tutta la Città di Venezia e mio personale voglio esprimere il più profondo cordoglio per la tragica scomparsa di una giovane psicologa di soli 26 anni,” which translates to, “On behalf of the entire City of Venice and personally, I want to express my deepest condolences for the tragic passing of a 26-year-old young psychologist.”
The truck driver, identified as a citizen of the Czech Republic, sustained only minor injuries, as did another man who was traveling with Chiara. Authorities are still investigating the precise cause of the collision.
Friends and community members describe Chiara as someone who was always ready to help others, embodying warmth and dedication. An acquaintance fondly remembered her, saying, “La vita ti fa male così, nel pomeriggio lento di un giorno qualsiasi,” or “Life hurts this way, on the slow afternoon of just any day.” This sentiment resonates deeply with those who knew her well.
The accident serves as another reminder of the increasing traffic woes on the A4, which sees many heavy vehicles due to roadway projects and the influx of trucks from Eastern Europe. Local traffic authorities were forced to implement emergency protocols to redirect traffic for safety following the accident.
Community leaders expressed widespread sorrow over the loss of Chiara, emphasizing how her contributions positively affected the lives of many. Valeria Cittadin remarked, “Chiara era una professionista appassionata e una persona speciale che ha sempre dato il massimo per aiutare gli altri,” meaning, “Chiara was a passionate professional and special person who always gave her all to help others.”
The sorrow felt extends not just to her immediate circle but to everyone who benefitted from her work. Chiara's family is well-known within the local rugby community, with her father and brother having both played for Rugby Rovigo, carrying on the family legacy of athletic excellence.
To many who knew her, Chiara was more than just a dedicated psychologist; she represented hope and compassion to those experiencing hardships. Her passion was not just her profession but fueled her everyday life.
The tragic collision on the A4 Autostrada may have taken Chiara’s life, but her legacy of kindness and service to the vulnerable will endure. Her family and friends will always cherish the light she brought to their lives, with the community standing shoulder to shoulder, grieving this irreplaceable loss.
Indeed, the loss of Chiara Moscardi reminds us how fragile life is, especially for those who dedicate their lives to uplifting others. Her story encapsulates the essence of human kindness, and she will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
